PMJI, but could you, or anyone, fill me in on this PAR device I keep hear about
on this forum. Is it a video card or a none-linear editing system or what? I
let my magazine subscriptions laps for just a little while and miss everything.

The PAR system consists of an ISA compression board, a dedicated IDE
harddrive, and software. You can get an optional TBC card for rotoscoping.
Files are rendered directly from 3DS in 24 or 32 bit or copied from the system
harddrive into a proprietary jpg file. You then play the file at 30fps to VHS,
SVHS, or Beta recorders. The software allows some simple cuts and joins but is
not editing software.
There may be a more complete description of the technical specs on the forum
or someone from DPS is usually on the forum and can fill you in.
Subjectively, the PAR is great for the price. It's around $1895 for the
board/software and roughly $900 for a 1 gig (8-10 min of animation) MICROPOLIS
drive. You must use Micropolis to get the performance at this time.
There are some jpeg compression artifacts which may show up if you're trying
to get broadcast quality output but for many users it's not that important.
There is no comparing the quality of the PAR vs. my VTV-2000 (haven't seen the
newer ones), PAR is in a different league.

SFMJI- Not being familiar with the VTV, are you saying the PAR is better
quality than the VTV?

Yes, the VTV-2000 converts tga's to 16 bit and uses a delta file like AAPRO,
so at 640×480 motion has to be slow with large pixel changes or you get
tearing. It also uses the system harddrive which can limit transfer rates. The
board captures at 16 bit as well.
The VTV-2000 has been out for a couple of years and it was a very good
alternative between flcs and single frame. The animation file is a proprietary
format so you need the board for playback to vhs or svhs.
I haven't seen the newer BitBlaster system they sell. The PAR is much better.

Thanks for the reply. About two days after asking about the PAR here, I
recieved a flyer from Digimation about it. Ever get the feeling your being
watched <g>. (Thanks for the flyer Digimation).
