3DS & ROOFS
9 messages in this thread
Hi again,
I'm back with my roof problem. I hope someone could give me
some direction.
I have a very complex roof I need to model. I can't really
loft a triangle along a ridge line. This thing has gables and valleys all over.
I've got autocad files of the elevations which I can dxf in.
I've got a sketchy plan view of the eaves. I've tried a varity of ways to
build this
thing but to no avail.
I've tried bring in each elevation as a shape and lofting each side a short
distance
thinking I could move the back verti around and boolean the thing together to
get
the valleys.
This doesn't seem to be reliable because I am forces to move the
polygons apart in the shaper, move them backtogether in 3ded and snap will not
let me line them up nicely. The complexity rapidly overwelms me.
I have another project that has a nice plan view of the roof, but again I must
seperate out the polygons to get it into the 3ded and then alignment is a pain
I guess it really comes down to…for complex roofs…must I construct my
geometry in Autocad? I really don't see anyway to build this thing in 3ds
in a reasonable timeframe.
Can you build a roof based on Elevs only or Plan only?
HELP!!!
thanks gods

Check out page 7-77 in the 3DS manual. That will allow you to create the roof
section individually, then align the "back" verticies to the other roof plane.
Or, am I not understanding the problem?
With some practice you should be able to model everything in 3DS.

Ted,
Your solution was the one I settled upon.
but the complexity of my projects (which might be easy for others)
quickly overwelms me.
As I told Greg…maybe I'm just using the wrong tool for the situation.
Huminoids are neat but they were developed outside of 3DS
(or at least that was the impression I got from a 3D seminar on them)
I guess I just need to learn my arsonal a little better
thanks for the quick reply

Everything? Everything? That would be a HUGE 3DS file, Ted. <ducking> -dave

See you Friday

Back in the days when I practiced Architecture before computers (quit laughing,
guys!) complicated residential roof plans were always a b*tch to draw. One of
the tricks we used was to draw a quick section of each area to translate to
plan view. It might help here.
Or, to make your life simple, get Facade from Eclipse Software. Excellent ACAD
add-on, draws walls, windows, doors, and complicated roofs easily. David Cohn
[73417,167] frequents this forum as well as ACAD, he can fill you in on the
details…

Greg,
Again you pop up with ideas! (I've seen Facade and it may be the solution
I had just hoped to do it all within 3DS)
I guess my final question is
"Is 3DS the best solution for all modeling"? probably not.
The 57 chevy viewpoint did, I would guess, was not modeled in 3DS
I can see a method to producing what I need in 3DS but with the
built in editing tools I don't see a fast way to do it.
I was hoping for that 'secret' method that would shave time off the model
creation. It doesn't seem to exist. Thats fine
I just wish I hadn't picked the mother of all architectural projects to start
3DS
with. (a nice ranch with a simple shed roof would have been nice :} )
(the roof of the Hotel del Cornado after an earthquake comes to mind)
So much creative stuff has come out of 3DS but, I don't really know how
many outside tools were used to get the data in.
Thanks for the support

a screwdriver, but a hammer sure comes in handy at times!
