Kentucky Collecting

I would like to collect some minerals for the fun of it and to have a neat
collection on my fireplace mantle. I live in Louisville KY and was wondering if
any one could suggest some places to collect in my home state or with-in a 200
mile radius.
PS I don't want to get shot looking for a rock so let me no if this is risky!

Welcome to the forum!
There follows a report from my database of fluorescent mineral locales in
adjacent states (I asked it for IL, IN, OH, KY, TN) – generally this is all I
know about the sites, being a Californian on assignment in Oklahoma.
Getting shot at by irate owners is one of the hazards of collecting, but if you
are careful about property signs and claim markers, it may be less of a hazard
than getting hit by a car while wandering about the side of a road with eyes
downcast.

I will have to check some of these out. I guess there is not to much exciting
collecting in Kentucky. I may have a great specimine from one of the Ill sites
already. Flourite (Looks a lot like amathyst) I think. My brother brought it to
me as a gift. Is there much jabber about collection in this forum? I think
collecting is one of the greatest things to do I can think of. I was out in the
west this summer and got a neat variety of rocks. I could not beleive Utah!
Every thing I picked up was fantastic! I caught part a TV show that was showing
some incredable finds in either the Virginas or in the Carolinas. Any thoughts
on where that might have been?

There is a fair amount of talk about mineral collecting here, but never enough
to suit me! Favorite subjects keep swinging from week to week as one
contingent or another gets gabby about something. Part of it is simply whether
a subject is visible on the board; since messages do not last here as long as
they used to (5 days now, 2 weeks when I found this place), the dominant
subjects may change even faster.
I am startled to hear of a TV show discussing a mineral find. What sort of
show and what channel was this? Lanny may have some notion what find deserves
such unusual treatment.
Remember that my list was solely of fluorescent minerals – Kentucky may have
plenty of other minerals that have escaped my narrow interest. But many states
would be hard pressed to compete with Utah. Deserts with mountains are a tough
combination to beat for rockhounds.
Anyone else know where to look for minerals in Kentucky?
