#Needed!

G,
I wonder what it takes to get a simple thing like font examples, or a flic
player that will play something other than 320×200. I don't understand how a
$2000.00 plus package can't seem to deliver such simple needed aspects of a
program. Most of the reviews I read on 3ds2 and on 3ds3 criticized 3DS for
these two factors yet nothing is done and we are expected to go out, find, and
download pieces that should be included to complete our 3DS programs. I just
don't understand the lack of support for the customer.

I try my best.
Thanks,

PS: John Stetzer correctly pointed out to you that there _are_ examples of all
the .pfb fonts already on the WCT CD-ROM, in .gif format. Plus, we give away a
player that plays any-res flics here on Compuserve, to everyone, free.

Gary,
Your doing great helping people out here, keep up the good work!!!

PMJI, You've placed this message in the wrong forum. This is ASOFT where
several people provide continuous daily support to all customers around the
world. Some work for ADESK, some for Yost, some for themselves. You wanted
the whining complainers forum, just type in GO INGRATE. <G>
Bob
Good one, Bob!
Yo Wade!
Heading east any time soon?
Bob
Greg-
The support here is incredible. I can get an intelligent answer to the most
obscure question (beleive me, I've asked them) and usually get it the next day-
or even later that day!
ASOFT has the best tech support around, bar none.
As far as features, there was a big wishlist for R4, and if you were around
back then, you could add feature x or y to the list. They were all compiled
together, and the most requested were done. There's even a permanant Wishlist
section for things.. I've displayed 640×480 256color flics lots of times.
Both in 3DS, and externally. Check the files sections for the players. I
usually use the PD playflc by VRLI.
Look in the CD for font examples. If you have the CD, you'll find them.
BTW- R4 is already done. (for features, that is) I doubt anything will be
added this late in the development.

JNJ,
Thanks for the info!

Way out of line on the "lack of support for the customer" thing. One of the
things that people who have this program also have is enough self-reliance to
ask the question in a way that will get answers. This is the forum where that
happens, better than on any other forum I've seen.
I'll give you an answer anyway – look in the Windows Shareware forum for a
product like Fonter or Printer's Apprentice. Both of these utilities will allow
you to load, view and printer complete specimen pages of every .PFB or TTF font
on your system, used by 3D Studio or not. This will be a lot more useful than a
simple picture of the font, in one size, in the manual.
I think we'd all prefer Adesk continue their focus on enhancing aspects of the
program and docs that will directly affect the usability and capabilities of
the software, IMHO.
rw
Robert,
You don't get it. It isn't about self-reliance, its about if the product is
complete. I should not have to download anything to have completely
functioning program. i.e. examples of all the fonts, even the cheapest
programs contain fonts have easily accessible examples. I consider that
Customer Support. And as for a player, 3DS has needed one for at least 2
versions now. Again Customer Support is the issue as I see it. So you can
either allow me my opinion of what Customer Support is or be a jerk attempting
to impose your definition of customer support on me. I think Gary and ADesk
are capable of looking after themselves.
Greg
Gregory, 3DS has a .FLC player. I don't know why you seem to think it doesn't.
If you've installed your video drivers properly you can view .FLC's at any
resolution you want. And, if you have enough memory you can also run a disk
cache that will allow you to play the animations out of RAM. As for the fonts,
the original fonts that were always with 3DS have always been pictured in the
manual. The .PFB fonts aren't. You're obviously quite new to the program and so
creating some images of fonts would be a good exercise anyway. You will get the
best support on this forum you'll find anywhere. Heck, I answered your
question. <g> If you participate on a fairly regular basis you can learn a ton.

Gregory –
What I was getting at is that the tone used in the question has alot to do with
the depth and tone of the answers you get back.
You're certainly welcome to your opinion about what constitutes good customer
service. An analogy would be entering a room full of people conversing at
normal volumes, and asking your first question in a shout. Tone and approach is
everything up here.
You're right, Yost & co. don't need my defense. I merely reacted to your
entree. My apologies.

3ds will do anything you can think of. It is life giving and wonderful. The
flic player on my copy of 3dsr3 plays 640 x 480 flics just fine. Can your
hardware handle a bigger flic? I made myself a font example printout. this is
much more helpful than anything on screen. Try 3ds, you will like it. Those
reviews are just someone elses opinion. I always form my own.
Jeff,
Is this a flic player that is seperate of 3DS, that can be put on a floppy disk
with a flic file and sent to clients?
Greg
No. I understand what you mean when you say they could have included the disks
for something like AAplayhi or AAplay. But flics are a general format. I once
bought a book on animation not related to Autodesk or anything normal and it
had a flic player with it. It also had a painful ray tracer that makes me glad
to have 3DS.
