sorry if this appears 2b a duplicate posting..but I think this is the right group, and I have done more research since the last posting: I have added a new p5-75 to my rendering farm…all of my machines are running windows for workgroups. When I try to start 3dsr4 from Windows, the screen goes black and I have to reboot. (WFWG is set for a 1024×768 16m colors diamond stealth 64 video pci w/4mb RAM) When I try to run 3ds4 from DOS w/o a net connection..(as a workstation) everything works OK (except that I get an error message that the network drives aren't available…of course..) It is set for 1024×768 w/16.7m Vibrant drivers. Everything runs fine except that I have no network connections…which of course makes it useless Any ideas that might help? thanx for being there

Do you need to run 3ds under windows? I have my home setup as an old 386/20 running WFW and acting as network server. The other two computers have a boot option to either start windows or to stay in dos. If they stay in dos, they attach the drives on the network server using the "NET start full /yes" command. LAM

>> Do you need to run 3ds under windows? I don't know if need is the word, Larry, but it is VERY convenient to modify maps in Pshop and ALT-Escape switch to 3DS for test renders… and back to Pshop and… Ralph

Agreed. I wasn't sure whether he wanted to run under WFW just for the networking capability, or whether he was actually running windows apps. LAM

I seem to need to run 3ds4 in windows in order to get full all machines to recognize each other….If one machine is in dos even with with the net started, the farm doesn't seem to work. In response to Ralph…my windows AND 3ds are the same resolution.. taking too much time to load anything can be the result of not enough conventional memory available…I have started using NETROOM memory manager…which itself may be the cause of my video problem…I will try that now.. -mkh/h3d

>> In response to Ralph…my windows AND 3ds are the same resolution.. As are mine Micheal, although the pixel depths are different which is still a video mode change. I mentioned switching to the Material Editor because this workaround is quick and easy (and better than re-booting). Just thought you might want to know how some of us were dealing with it. Ralph

Though I am not as happy as I would like to be (I want 16m colors), it is adequate. Thanx for your response… mkh/h3d

(WFWG is set for a 1024×768 16m colors >> diamond stealth 64 video pci w/4mb RAM) Michael, Some video cards have a terrible time changing resolutions between Windows and 3DS, my Viper Pro has the same glitch. Have you tried hitting F5 after you switch to 3DS, this switch to the ME's different resolution seems to kickstart the card and bring it back to life. >> When I try to run 3ds4 from DOS w/o a net connection..(as a workstation) >> everything works OK… How long have you waited. I thought I was having problems with 3DS and the Network, but figured later that it just takes MUCH longer to load with NET connections. Ralph

We use the same card (2MB only) and it usually works in DOS. For running under windows you will have better luck configuring 3DS for VESA instead of stealth. Just set up a second 3ds.set file (maybe called 3dswin.set?) with the different configuration in it. The add "set=3dswin.set" to the 3DS.PIF command line. Then just execute the 3DS.PIF. In any case you will probably have to use F5 to switch to the Materials editor when you switch back to 3DS from Win because the 3DS video will be trashed. >> When I try to run 3ds4 from DOS w/o a net connection..(as a workstation) everything works OK (except that I get an error message that the network drives aren't available…of course..) Then in our WIN.BAT we do "net stop /yes" to unload the DOS net drivers. Windows then uses its net drivers. When we exit windows, the WIN.BAT restarts "net start full". BTW the easiest way to set up net connections for DOS is to set them up in Fileman. DOS then just inherits the settings. A bit of a cludge, but WFWG and DOS client software don't really work together. MS really doesn't want people to use DOS anymore I guess. Terry Gilbert Forcade & Associates

Terry Gilbert>> I am not sure what you are trying to tell me here: Is it that i can run 3dstudio networked, using just the DOS WFWG client on all machines? If I use WFWG and the DOS client then it's only a 1-way connection. I just tried running the DOS clent server on both machines and they don't seem to recognize each other's drives. I don't understand why you load "net start full" (the DOS client) in the first place if you take it out before you go into Windows? I just use 'net start" in my autoexec.bat..then I don't have to unload DOS drivers. At what point in this scenario are you using 3dstudio? Is it in DOS or Windows? My net connections and shared drives have already been set up in Window File manager. I am not sure why you exit windows to restart "net start full"…are you grtting ready to use 3dStudio at this point?
