He-He, that was fun with Joliwrite in the late evening! Your assumption is correct about the suitcases of people I do work for. It seem unlikely that thier font IDs would match mine completely. Especially with regards to style variations. I'm not quite sure how these are maintained in the individual documents is it 'ID 128 + bold' or 'ID 129' (which IS a 128 + bold). It almost seems that if a NFNT merges style variations into the parent (plain) FOND that those NFNTs wouldn't matter at all. Is that true? I can understand the incompatability with numbers higher than 255. Not being one to follow the POPULAR opinion, I use Quark Xpress. It's one of the people I do work (and troubleshooting) for who use PageMaker. They are gearing up to provide output service to the outside world. As such they must support PageMaker, though they use Xpress for thier own in-house stuff. I don't have quite as many fonts as they do so thier problem is a bit more severe. I recommended that they get Suitcase II to solve thier current conflict problem which affects all programs, but the PageMaker thing throws a wrench in the works. Last I heard PageMaker 3.0.1 was not yet available. Do you know if the PageMaker incompatablity is due to the styled font names being removed or is it a numbering limitation? If it is just the names would they suppression of merging styled fonts have any impact? Since I don't have PageMaker I have no way of testing it before discussing this with them. Thanks, Jim

PageMaker 3.0.1 is available — I have a copy through regular update channels from Aldus. How fonts are remembered in documents would be a function of the application; but if you choose the Booful font and Bold from the style menu, it would (if not PageMaker, which remembers names) have to remember the font number of Booful and also the bold attribute — for when you open the doc, it knows that it's bold, as you can unbold it. However, if you choose B Booful Bold, then all that would be remembered is the font number for B Booful Bold. The PageMaker 3.0 incompatibility (fixed in 3.0.1) is with font numbers greater than 511. It has nothing to do with a problem with names.

Thanks Steve, I think I have it pretty much nailed down now. Jim
