We've had a NEC LC-890 since May '88 and since that time we've had the
following persistent print quality problem: graphics and large size fonts
on the left side of the page often print in a smudged condition, that is,
there will be a dark shadow around the graphic. We've reported the
condition to NEC's warranty service and have been told simply the clean the
machine & that sometimes we may need to clean the machine after every
graphic to avoid the problem!
Cleaning usually, but not always, helps. For instance, right now we're
having an impossible time trying to print a Pagemaker document because the
graphics on the right side of the page keep smudging no matter how many
times we try to clean the printer.
Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone offer any suggestions?
You need to take the 890 back to NEC and let them clean it! I had the same
problem with our 890 after it had been transported in a van over a few
bumps. The loose toner needs to be vacuumed out, but you don't want to use
a household vacuum cleaner. The toner particle size is so small that it
will shoot right out of a normal vacuum cleaner bag.
If your 890 is still in warranty, NEC will clean it for free (they cleaned
ours!). After they clean it, be sure not to put the PC cartridge back in
until the printer is back on a flat, stable surface.
I have encountered this problem every so often. While my problem may not be
as severe as what you've described, but when the NEC does smear on
specific print-outs, I set the number of copies for 2 – invariably, the
second copy is fine or at least greatly improved.
Sometimes (rarely) I'll run 5 copies of an empty page through the 890 (with
a tiny PostScript program) to clear loose toner. Usually, a good wipedown
also does the trick. The culprits are the big, dirty spreader roller and
loose particles that fall from the PC cartridge.
We need to cross breed the NEC-890 with the common house cat to come up
with a printer that cleans itself. Not sure NEC is working on that one
yet.
