#How to CG with PC?
4 messages in this thread
OK, call me old fashioned. We do a lot of linear editing in SVHS and Beta,
using an MX-50 for effects and an Amiga with Supergen and Broadcast Titler for
CG.
Someday, my Amiga may break down, and the thought occurred to me that we better
have a back up. Is now a good time to switch to a PC platform for CG purposes?
We'll stay with the MX-50 for effects.
My question is: what PC genlock and software would give us SHVS & Composite in
and out, and equal or better quality than we have now?
We do simple overlays, and text over backgrounds. We do need a manual fade,
and our budget would be $700 – 1200, plus the PC. It might be nice to overlay
clipart or scanned in logos down the road.
Can we expect similar quality from PC's, or should I keep hoping that the Amiga
keeps runnin'?
Any help appreciated.
Take a look at VGAPRO.TXT in Library 2 of this forum. Over a year ago I
reviewed a number of PC video output cards with genlock functions. The Magni
VGA Producer Pro is my current recommendation. It will handle what you are
looking for and features an external remote control to control fade/cut
functions, pan/zoom of PC graphics, and more. The base version of the card
does NTSC composite and S-Video. A version is available which does Betacam SP
and MII.
My review of the Truevision Video VGA 16 is also in the library, it shows why I
don't recommend that product.

James:
Thanks for the reference to your review; it is <very> informative and helpful.
My next question is: at it's best, how does the Produce Pro compare to the
output quality of an Amiga w/ supergen.
Thanks for your help.

Tom
I have only seen the supergen once. From what I recall it was not bad. The
VGA Producer Pro was at least as good if not better. ABC uses it routinely, as
does HBO for titling. I use it for educational videotapes (teaching how to get
into multimedia and DTV production).
