John,
Thanks for the post…… I have been looking to buy a Laser Disk
player…. and this looks like the model for me!!
To bad more people don't know more about LDs, because the picture and sound
just can't be beat!
Keep me up to date on the price.
Same time same place………
Greg
Well then, you're gonna LOVE this….
The price of that LD Player (MDP-1100) will list for $795.!! Should be
able to find it even cheaper than that.
Local dealer called me today, and told me he would sell me one for $725; it
would take about three weeks to get.
I am glad I waited 🙂

Not to get of the subject, but I saw one of those Progressive Peripherals
040 boards in action the other day, plugged into a 2000. Made me VERY
jealous and sick compared to my 3000. He rendered a 24bit Vista Pro picture
in less than 9 minutes. Then he ran Aibb-3 and it showed speeds on all
tests about 3-4 times faster than a 3000, with a stock 2000 barely showing
a ripple on the speed chart. Could have killed him 8^)

John, did you mistype the 'he rendered a 24bit VistaPro picture in less
than 9 minutes."?? I just rendered one in 4'40", on my GVP 28mhz 030
equipped A2000. Had all the slow-down-the-rendering goodies turned on,
too. And it had to do the pre-calcs too.
Maybe by '*less* than 9 minutes' you meant 30 seconds? It would be true,
you know 🙂

John,
Thanks for the info on the MDP-1100! The only thing it doesn't have that
I'd want is digital-store for CLV effects, but the computer control makes
up for it. I picked up a Pioneer LD-V2200 from an Amiga dealer a few months
ago, though; it doesn't play CD's, but it's a blast digitizing CAV video
and modifying CBM's point-of-sale demo!

Yeah, it would be real nice if the MDP-1100 had a few other effects…. in
addition to the digital freeze, I'd particularly like the ability to
automatically play BOTH sides of CAV/CLV discs. Many CAV discs are
two-sided, and in developing a MM app I'd surely like to be able to access
both sides, rather than telling the user, 'Now turn the disc to side TWO".
🙂
Oh well, maybe in another year or two? For now, the MDP-1100 seems about
as flexible/affordable as one can get.

John,
I wonder how quickly we'll see a driver for AmigaVision for it. Or will
a current one work? Did you say you were ordering one? What will you be
doing with it?
Karl
– via Whap!
Not ordering one yet 🙂 Am strongly considering it though.
Part of what holds me back is the cost of the genlock I'd need to make it
really useful (in a computer environment). Shoot, that's more than the LD
player!
Re drivers, there are a ton of ld drivers on the AV disc, and the flyer for
the new MDP-1100 says that it is compatible with the sony LDP series, so
I'd think it would work fine (under AV, of course). I'd have to write my
own controller for CanDo, etc, but I don't think that would be a problem.
ahh… hope not 🙂
The MDP-1100 also plays audio CD's, and offers computer control over
accessing them. Since you can access audio CD's to the second, I'd think
that some good music educational programs could come out of that? (ala
the Voyager discs for the Mac).
Anyway, stay tuned. Maybe RSN. 🙂

John..
re: cost of a genlock.
Actually, one of the BEST genlock solutions for using a LD player is the
CBM 2300. It keeps your Amiga graphics in RGB, and codes your NTSC signal
to RGB as well. This doesn't actually 'improve' the quality of your NTSC
signal, but it *doesn't* degrade the quality of your Amiga generated
graphics by stepping them down to NTSC. As a result, you get a beautiful
display. AND the card is very very cheap.
I've used many genlocks over the years, and the 2300 just makes the best
sense for any multimedia application I've done (touchscreen included).
Jim
Jim, does the A2300 go in the Video slot, or is it external? I've a
FlickerFixer in the video slot, and wouldn't want to give that up.
But your argument makes sense. For MM stuff it certainly would be nice to
still have the RGB video. (BTW, is that why folks are asking about the
A2320 in reference to the IV24 board, cause the IV24 requires RGB video,
and that's what the A2320 puts out?)
You can use as a normal genlock, no?
Last question, will the A2320 be able to use the HAM-E or FireCracker24
output on top of the video???
Questions…. questions…. thanks.
–jp–seattle–
Well, lets see here..
First, the 2300 requires the video slot. So you cannot have both the
flicker fixer and 2300 co-existing in the same machine (unless the DEB
board would work, but as far as I know that's designed for the Microway
flicker fixer card).
The 2320 puts out two kinds of RGB video. 15 and 31 Khz. I don t't know
what kind of video the IV24 wants, I really don't know anything about it.
When you're talking about dealing with laserdisc applications, you really
need to forget about flicker fixers and the like. Even if it means taking
your 2320 out temporarily so you can develop your application. Screen
positioning with the 2300 (with video being fed into it) get's messed up a
bit, so for that reason alone you would want to develop your application
*through* the 2300, just to make sure your screen positioning is correct.
I don't see any way to use the 2320 output with Firecracker or Ham-E, cuz
those devices require 15Khz video, although you could rig up something to
get it to *work* with these devices, but you'd have to have the card in
'disable' mode to get 15Khz video out of it…so why bother.
Unless you worded your message wrong and meant to ask if you can use the
'2300' to overlay Ham-E type stuff and Firecracker stuff, that makes more
sense to me. (your original message asked if you can use the 2320 and Ham-e
or FF together). I haven't tried it, but I'd venture to say that, yes, why
not? After all, the Ham-E and FF are fairly transparent in the way they
deal with Amiga signals (or so it would seem). Ben might want to comment
further.

Remember John,
I am selling a perfect condition SuperGen 2000s and a Pioneer LD-V4200
laserdisc player.

John,
Yeah, I just got my requested flyer from Voyager and was pining for
those neat audio applications. Neat stuff.
I thought those guys were the ones that had the Voyager spacecraft
image disks as well, but I must have gotten confused on the names. Time to
go search my saved Whap message files. I think I'd have fun creating a
Voayger AmigaVision application. Great fun.
John,
$725…. Sounds good to me. Good luck.
I was wondering though…. Does this thing have any 'digital features?' or
stuff like playing both sides of the disk??
Same time same place………
Greg
No 'digital' features, nor the ability to play both sides of a disc.
I'd rate the ability to play both sides of a two-sided disc the most
important feature that missing. There are a lot of CAV discs that it would
be nice to have your program automatically play the right side, rather than
requesting the user to manually flip the disc 🙁
Oh well, maybe later. The fact that it offers multi-format play is a major
stride in the right direction.

Price on SONY MDP-1100: $795. list.
–jp–seattle–
What is the price?
ERIC
– via Whap!
Hot from the phone call: $795 list! Great price!
–jp–seattle–
OK all, I've got the price on the Sony MDP-1100 multi-disc format LD player
(w/ computer control): $795. list.
The dealer I talked with quoted me $725, and three weeks delivery.
Sounds pretty good to me!
–jp–seattle–
The Voyager Company, (they produce the excellent Criterion Collection laser
discs), are advertising the MDP 1100 for $695. They also produce a lot of
software for use with videodiscs, Mac only so far.

Thanks, but I have a local dealer who will do it for less than $695, so I
think I'll go there 🙂
Voyager stuff is pretty good, at least what I've seen. Some real nice music
stuff (didn't they do Mozart's annotated 'Flute'?) videodisk/software?
–jp–seattle–
John,
What price is your local dealer selling it for? Cause $695 sounded
better then your $725 quote from before……
Same time same place………
Greg
Did I say $695? If so, sorry. My dealer quoted $725. (list $795)
One would need to spring for the LDM-1100 interface manual too, I'd think.
In order to really use the computer interface.
