#MM Buying Advice (Help!)

So can you get MM Windows, as supplied by Media Vision, to run? I've got
the Media Vision MPC upgrade kit, and even though I've stripped out all
extraneous drivers and boards, I get frequent crashes in MM Windows. If I
run the Sound Recorder and play several sounds, it will crash regularly.
Curious as to your experiences.

I just installed MM Windows last night – haven't had too many problems
so far. I did experience one crash back to the DOS prompt with Windows
unable to restart – it occurred while playing the 28-meg .WAV file in the
demos\spooky directory on the CD. I haven't experimented with the Sound
Recorder yet – sounds like there may be a DMA problem. I used to run
regular Windows and get crashes when digitized sounds played – then I got a
DMA error message. Perhaps the MM Win crashes are related. As always, this
"bleeding edge" technology is tough to work with.
The other problem I'm having is getting the Sequencer to play my MIDI
files properly – the percussion sounds like sweeping white noise. I guess
I'll have to mess around with the MIDI Mapper some more.

I called Media Vision support today, and they suggested that my Win crashes
might be caused by a bad sound board, although I kind of doubt that. Per
your suggestion, I mentioned that it might be DMA related and they agreed,
but changing from channel 1 to 3 doesn't seem to have helped. I bought the
upgrade with the full realization that there would probably be lots of
problems, so I'm not too surprised. Now I'll see how responsive MV is to
working to solve problems. Keep in touch re your progress.

So far so good – no further crashes since the last time I dropped you
a note here. I've been using the sound recorder quite a bit, just goofing
around and replacing the "stock" sound effects, and haven'thad any
problems, even with a bunch of applications running. The only quirk I've
seen is that the entire system (even the mouse pointer) seems to slow down
after recording sound – I suspect the system may be playing housekeeping
catchup after devoting a lot of CPU energy to 22 kHz recording. Any
similar effects on your machine? The slowdown only lasts a little while,
then everything is back up to speed. Odd, but I can live with it. Like
you said, the new stuff is always a little… well, new.
