im trying to figure out how to animate a texture lofting along a helix path, like to simulate flow through a spiral straw. does anybody have any tips or suggestions? justin

Perhaps look into the PYTHON routine offered by Schreiber Inst.

wow, thanks. is it available in any of the libraries here on cserve? justin.

Justin, >> … how to animate a texture lofting along a helix path, like to simulate flow through a spiral straw … << the cheapest way, and probably most effective, is to turn on lofted mapping when creating the object. Probably use settings 1 and 1. Then create an animated opacity map – a white to black animation over x frames. You use both the texture map and the opacity map as a material on the straw.

thanks alot for the info! i was experimenting with something like that a little bit already, except i wasnt using the flic as an opacity map too. wasnt quite getting the effect i was after… hey, do you know if the same technique will also work on a freehand path, drawn in the 2d shaper? like to simulate cursive writing? thats what i was trying the wht to blk flic on, it came out more like the flic was planar mapped across the front of the 3d object. well, thanks again for the info! justin.

Justin, >> do you know if the same technique will also work on a freehand path, drawn in the 2d shaper? << Yes, It's a well documented technique. Create a freehand path and get path into the lofter. Loft a shape along it with mapping. If you don't already have it, I'd highly recommend "Inside 3d Studio", published by NRP. It contains that technique and much, much more.

is the key in the trick that the wipe of the flic file has to be vertical? i wrote my name in cursive as a freehand line, brought it in as a path, lofted a shape with mapping turned on. applied the surface, with the flic as a texture & opacity map, but it was a horizontal wipe, and the final rendered scene was just kind of a vanishing effect, still not the look im trying to achieve…probably just something small and stoopid that im forgetting to do or over-looking! thanks again for the continued assistance, it is much appreciated! justin. oh yeah, does anyone know where i can track down the schreiber inst. 'python' routine?

Justin, you can rotate your opacity map using the material editor setup controls. Play with the rotation value in 90 degree increments until the writing appears correctly.

Just use a flic file of a white rectangle moving upwards, and use it as an opacity map. Try it oooot!
