#Selling the Amiga
13 messages in this thread
Good questions. Recently I made the sad decision that I can't afford to buy
any more Amiga hardware. I've owned a 1000, 500, 2000 and now have a 3000.
The buck stops here. What will I buy next? A Quadra (or its big brother.)
The hardware has a little bit to do with it — the fact that it's 1992 and
I can't run a 24-bit workbench bugs the hell out of me.
But it's mostly software. There's nothing the caliber of Quark, Photoshop
and Illustrator for the Amiga. Nothing even in the ballpark. Add Textsynth,
Adobe Type Manager and various other apps, and the Amiga software pales.
I'll continue to use my Amiga for a daily hobby machine —
telecommunications, hours of using VistaPro, and SuperBase (the best piece
of Amiga software in the world, IMNSHO), but I can't recommend it as a
production machine for anything but video. <sigh>

There is indeed something the quality of Photoshop. Imagemaster – in fact,
in most ways, it's a LOT better than Photoshop, and these are the ways
that Photoshop is typically used (as an image manipulator). We don't do
postscript (yet) but that's about it.
And of course, there's AdPro, which might count for something, for some
people.

I just noticed your "name" here, and while I've probably spotted it
before, I hadn't picked up Hacker before now. You might want to pass it
on to whoever handles "gee, I really liked your game…" letters that I
really liked Hacker… I especially liked the fact that Clone PCs only
get two hacks per turn, Hackintoshes get only 3, but the Amoeba 3000 gets
four… Obviously someone knows a powerful machine when they see it…

So… When's the first Hacker expansion set due out? 🙂

Steve,
Pardon my butting in, but are you talking about the game Hacker that
was released around 6 years ago?
-Sean
Nope — he's talking about our boxed card game, _Hacker_, that was released
earlier in the year! Phreaks! Narcs! Net Ninjas! Pizza! Jolt! Everything
you need to be an unruly computer thug . . .
Loyd
Loyd,
I take it that Hacker's a game? Text only maybe? What (very) little
I've heard sounds interesting; can you tell me more without it being an
advertisement<g>?
-Sean
It's not a computer game at all — it's a boxed card game. If you've ever
played the game _Illuminati_ (which we also publish), the mechanics grew
from it . . .
Loyd
I'll have a look around for it…
-Sean
The "Hacker" game I'm talking about here is a boxed sort-of-card game.
Similar in design (but not gameplay) to the classic Illuminati game, by
the same company.
It's especially entertaining if you have a computer background and know
the jargon. Has a lot of awful puns and really incredibly silly bits an
pieces in it. You basically have some cards which are systems on a
network, and the object is to hack your way onto a certain number of those
systems, without getting raided or busted too many times. Other cards can
be played on other players to cause them to be raided, and yet other cards
give you advantages to hack and the like. ("Hi, this is Joe Jones…
I've forgotten my password, so could you reset it to "JOE" for me?
Thanks.")
–>Steve Bennett
Ahh, I'm begining to understand. Thanks for the description, sounds
pretty fun(ny)…
-Sean
🙂 Well, the high Amoeba hack rate is due to the 3000 sitting on my desk
here. RHIP. 🙂
I'm putting _Hacker II: The Dark Side_ tentatively on the schedule for 2nd
quarter 1993.
Loyd
I like the title. I'm looking forward to seeing it.
Since I have your ear, how about a quick clarification… There's a card
(Surge Protector Fails) which you can play on another player to force him
to lose an upgrade. Who gets to choose the upgrade lost, the player who
plays the card, or the player who the card is played on? It's hard to say
from the description on the card…
–>Steve Bennett
I don't have a copy here at home (I don't have *room* for any more games!
:-), but my recollection is that the player upon whom the card is played
gets to pick.
