More problems with Razor Pro!
I'm having problems with any 16bit WAV's. When I double-click on one in the
library, it plays fine in the player, but when I double-click on the same WAV
in the comp window, it plays back like very loud static. I have changed my PCM
driver to priority 1 in my sound mapper control panel but it didn't help. When
I try to make a preview or a "final" AVI with 16 bit audio, I either get
static, no sound, or no video or sound. I received a MMTASK error on my last
attempt and everything from RAZOR to the PROGMAN crashed.
I was wondering if threre was any way to make cutomized audio output settings.
There needs to be a way to independantly select sampling rate, 8/16 bit and
mono/stereo. The two options that come up are just not enough. The library
also needs to state what the settings of a sound file are.
How can I select a specific area of the Comp window for my final output (like
the preview area select)? This is a very basic and needed feature. Surely I
don't have to create a new project for every single output file!
Oh, I almost forgot, why can't I seem to be able to access ANI's on my PAR
slave drive? I have to be able to do this because I use the master for
animations and the slave for video capture. This is very frustrating!
I hope there is a solution to most of these problems. I have been using this
program for less than 24 hours and I feel I have run into more than my share of
difficulties. I decided to purchase the more expensive RP instead of waiting
for Premiere 4.0 (supposed to support PAR) because everyone kept telling me RP
was better. I have yet to see it. I think those people may have been
comparing it to Premiere 1 for Windows. Version 4 on the Mac is pretty close
to a flawless product.
Getting more frustrated by the hour
Mitch
PMJI,
Mitch I have been working with Jamie for over a month now. Myself and a few
others have been fighting the problems you have mentioned and many others. I
will say that IN:SYNC has been very responsive on the bugs found in Razor Pro
and has fixed many of them. There are problems with Razor which are out of
IN:SYNC's hands. I found it best to E-MAIL Jamie personally and report your
bugs directly to him.
About the audio problems, Jamie suggested to save the Wave files as *.AVI
format and you have much more control over them, and the master/slave problem
is a problem with the DPS MCI driver which is being fixed as we speak. I do
most of my audio edits in WAVE for Windows and then bring in my tracks into
Razor.
I find Razor Pro to work for my needs, it gives me more control over the PAR,
I do not have to create IFL's in VP and you can use the preview before you do
the final output. I do not think Premier has the near the speed that Razor has,
which is another plus. Hang in there and I think you will be happy with what
you have, with the up comming releases of Razor Pro for Windows and NT, it is
going to be a much more powerful program than Premier.

P.S. IN:SYNC has been updating there BBS a couple times weekly, so keep in
touch with the current updates of Razor (I noticed you mentioned something
about the snap in the Comp. window, that was added a few updates ago.)
Thanks for your reply. It's good to know I'm not alone in my sorrow. I have
tried converting my WAV's to AVI's, but have had no luck, just noise (when
working with 16 bit, 8bit works fine). I have been sending the same messages I
posted here to Jamie by e-mail also, along with some other I haven't posted
here. Hopefully my security level will be upgraded on the In-Sync BBS soon so I
can download an updated version. I just signed on two days ago. If alot of
the problems have been fixed, then great. I just feel I have paid a lot of
money for a BETA version. This program takes the cake for the most problematic
software I have ever purchased, even beating out Playmation and Animation
Master.

Mitch,
'problematic' – RAZOR PRO brings together several different
manufacturers – in:sync who make editing software. DPS who used
to make a DOS only animation device. Your sound card manufacturer.
and of course Microsoft with Windows. Effective communication
between these programs depends on: Everyone working to the same
standards and an OS which is able to handle these different
devices. This makes it imperative to have correct configurations
for each of these devices and these are covered by our manual.
As we discussed we fixed the audio problem and a new version
is available on our BBS and will be available from your dealer
after Friday along with the new manual.

Yeah alright forgot you guys, Sooooorrrrrrryyy.
That is what makes the difference, but one question do you do this for Adesk
during weekends or just because of …….

…love? ..asoft addiction..? yup! 🙂
Mitch,
I use Razor Pro 1.0a and dont have the static problems you are haveing.
My audio board is a Turtle Beach board and I have noticed it has very
few bugs in the driver compared to my Sound Blaster 16bitASP board.
The Sound Blaster board had all sorts of problems that I only realized were SB
problems after I got my new Turtle Beach Card.

In agreement with Bob,
I have been running RP for a while now using the Roland RAP10 card
and have had no problems….

Cool, what do you like most about it? This is kind of an open question because
I'm sure people are using it for a lot of different reasons.
John
John ,
I work with a mix of media, prodominately 3d character animation
composited with location video. Recently I have been getting involved in music
video production for several NYC based bands. The PAR as you know will hold all
the acquision footage, but it's RP that allows me to grab big chunks of that
data and work with them on the fly. Imagine if you can interactively clicking
& dropping
a 2 or 3 minute, 752 by 480, clip into the construction window and being able
to trim it and otherwise edit it on the fly. Now just to turn up the heat, go
grab a couple more of these 1800 – 3600 frame clips and just drag and drop them
around as if you were working with 30 frame 320/240 flcs. At first glance RP
may seem undergunned as far as all the 'toys' that a Premiere might offer, but
similar to 3ds3,
once you understand how to use and manipulate the effects in RP I don't think
anyone would be left wanting.
I temper this testimony with the understanding that this is a young
product. Initially there were some bumps. But the folks at In-Sync seem to
really care, and have by far the best system of keeping their customers updated
I've seen. They keep any required updates a user may need on their BBS, and an
occasional new effect that may be under development that we can play with.
I think as time goes by and their perceived newness wears off, they will
continue to grow into a major force in PC DTV. ( one guy's humble opinion
: ) )
B-
Brendan,
Sounds like you some real fun work! I know that type of production environment;
things need to be done fast and right. Down and dirty as they say, but it takes
real skill to make it work.
The feedback I got on RP when it was being tested was very similar to your
experience. Very fast in a production environment, and you've more than
substantiated comments that I've heard personally. I thank you for that as for
awhile it looked as though RP was getting a bum rap.
I'm particularly impressed because with Music Videos especially, video follows
audio, which means that RP has to be able to accomodate that style of editing.
It seems to be flexible enough to accomodate either approach. Something that
the Matrox Studio was not set up to do. (VFA) And when you compare the price
with anything in its class, its a remarkable buy as compared to say an Avid or
a Max even which isn't really set up do this sort of thing at present because
of the lack of an interface. Not that they're exactly in the same league but…
Your point about it being young technology is a good one. Inconviences are to
be expected, but the fact that the people involved are committed to making it
right and that's what counts. Too frequently with a product which has little
competition, (at least at this point) you feel you just have to work around the
problems and there's not much you can do about it.
I'm an ex-editor and I guess once you have it in your blood you never really
lose it. So while I'm not directly involved, I'm very interested in what is
developing. I've actually contacted SoftVTR about the possibility of writing
drivers for it to make it a complete NLE system. What they told me was
suprising; that basically with the Windows interface and SoftVTR because of the
way Windows allows OLE and Dynamic linking etc. you could use their out of the
box Windows drivers and set it up to do just that. The PAR is the odd element
in the equation because it has only a GPI to activate it but I suppose an
adapter could be made from an RS-232 port which would give enough signal to
activate it. Then a small interface to incorporate SoftVTR and the PAR and RP
thru DLE and you'd be all set, I think. What are your thoughts on this?
Thanks,
John you would expect otherwise.
