#Materials (How to make?)

Dennis: I use an aluminum that is really a metal shaded light gray with a
reflection map. I'm still not completely satisfied with it, but it looks OK.
I'm sure that you've noticed that different "shiny silver" metals look
different – the main difference being the exact color of gray that makes up
their base color.
I've really been amazed at how even a slight reflection map does wonders for
the metallic quality of a material.
What I need is a really good floor tile that shows the irregular bright shiny
reflections that you get because real time isn't flat! <g>

On my floor it is! <G> Ha!
I would suppose that a combination of maps could provide you with what you
want. I'm would think that an opacity map of the pattern would allow you to
"see through" the rough parts on the top surface to the shiney parts
underneath. But I am only guessing.

Dennis: The problem is that when you look at the floor, you see the
tannish-yellow tile, the seams between the tiles – at least for the tiles close
to the camera – and, as the distance increases you begin to see bright but
irregular reflections in the same color as the lights. They seem to be caused
by the fact that A) the tiles aren't really flat, and B) the floors are lit by
a series of lights so there are a number of light source – floor – camera
angles operating at once.
On top of that you still have the "metapattern" problem – where you see large
repeating patterns that come from repeating the tile over and over again. There
isn't enough randomness in normal tiled materials when you do tile floors,
grass, etc…

Is it possible that you could "exclude" the floor from some of the lights?
Would this help. Release 3 has this feature.
>> "metapattern" problem –
I don't have any suggestions for this one.

Dennis: The problem with my floors is that there aren't **enough** hilights.
I don't think that there is any solution to the metapattern problem – even a
random tile map will end up being a **repeated** random tile map.
You need to generate maps that are randomized over the entire object to get
rid of the big patterns.
