Does anybody know what the scoop is on the 68060 chip? I keep hearing
vague rumors, but no hard data. Are these chips available (in any
quantity)? Does anybody plan an Amiga accelerator based on them? How much
more powerful are they than an '040?
Any data much appreciated!

The '060 only exists in the R&D stages right now. Don't expect shipping
chips for at least another year. Last article I read says that Motorola
is expecting a 50mhz '060 to be 3.5x faster than a 25mhz '040…which does
not sound like a real quantum leap.

The 68060 is not yet a real product. In fact it isn't scheduled to be
released until 1st qtr of 1994. A 50Mhz '060 is claimed to be 3 times
faster than a 25Mhz '040 with a 66Mhz part planned. As of right now that
is about all the information available.

Motorola says they are finishing the RISC implementation of the instruction
set in the '060, and adding superscaler. That should result in a lot of
speed when runing out of cache, and a massive degradation on cache misses.
The caches are to be larger as well. This should result in a best case
performance of about 2.5X at the same clock speed. This is from
information received at the Motorola Educational Conference.
