When will the proof/draft copies of the r12 update, the TRG and the Ped
Guide be out. Is Milt the sole person doing the DTP??
Any word as of yet on the ship date of ani Pro v1.5????

I am searching for a series of simple #DS exercises to have on hand at the
3dsv2 update session I will be doing on Nov. 5,6,7,8. So if your teaching
3ds v2 and have developed some exercises lets trade some materials here or
via U.S.Mail. I will provide one of all the exercises I receive from this
effort if you contribute just one. Lets hope There all different.<g> BFN

Pat, I have a collection of utilities and related handouts for Dos line
rendering. Being able to take advantage of multiple machine use for this
purpose is very powerful – but brings with it some added managment
challenges. Send me your address and I'll drop you the utilities (all
freeware or shareware) and handouts (Word 2.0 for Windows and/or Pagemaker

The Learning Resource Series (LRS) will up on Order Entry (OE) as of the
end of Oct. This will make them available to anyone anywhere, primarily
through their dealer.

Wayne – what's the difference between any or all of the LRS and the R12
Dealer Upgrade Training kit? I've just spent a *lot* of hours turning most of
the latter into training material for students through our dealership… I'd
hate to spend more resources and find it was basically the same…?

Hi Dave. Not sure what the "R12 Dealer Upgrade Training Kit" you mention
is, we don't have any product by that name. However, guessing that you
mean the materials from the Dealer Training dept. that you would have
received at one of their training sessions on R12, then the answer is that
this is the same materials that we have released as the "AutoCAD R12 Update
Exercise Set". Sounds like you have done the same thing we have which is to
convert this material into a form suitable for instructors and students in
a classroom situation.
This is the first of the Learning Resource Series, Technical material. We
will be following with more material to cover AutoCAD, 3DS and others as
driven by demand.
It would be interesting to see the approach you took in "converting" the
materials and compare them to ours. Care to swap one of yours for one of
ours? <g> Would also value your overall input on the whole topic of
learning resources for instructors and students. Thoughts you might have
on what works and what doesn't. What you need the most as an instructor.
What you would want Autodesk to supply ideally. ……… You get the
idea.

Wayne – I'd be happy to let you see mine if you let me see yours! <g> It is
definitely "in progress" at this time, but let me have your fax number and
I'll send an exercise or two off. It's all text now, but I'd like to add some
illustrations eventually. I found the quickest-and-dirtiest way to pull
through when I *need* illustrations is to make SLDs with arrows pointing to
what I want the students to work on, and display them on the overhead.
It *is* a regurgitation of the stuff we did in dealer training. Same drawings
and same exercises (for now), although as time permits I want to start
replacing both — I think I read (here?) that the dealers could use this
material for their own training as long as they didn't copy it verbatim.
What would I like to see? *Timely* material for teaching three levels of
AutoCAD — which pretty well means it would have to come from Autodesk. We've
been using prepared material from Walter Kappelmann Associates in Ontario for
our R11 stuff, but he won't have anything for R12 until into the new year.
I've already taught two R12 upgrade classes, with 2 more booked over the next
3 weeks. I also have an Introduction to AutoCAD coming up soon, for which I
am going to have to rewrite the Kappelmann stuff to bring it up to 12 level.
All that said, training is a really tough sell in this market at this time.
The R12 upgrade classes I've done have had one person in each. And we were
discounting them for people who bought their upgrades from us. In other
words, we're losing money here. The owner of the dealer where I work (did I
tell you where I work?) is making noises like "Maybe we shouldn't be doing
training."

Learning resources… well, a dedicated classroom would be nice (I wish!!).
I'd like to have four to six stations permanently allotted to a classroom,
with all the materials on a net. That's tough to pull off in a dealership,
where there's a lot of pressure to sell everything through. The overhead is
fine to work with, although I'd prefer a colour LCD panel to the monochrome
one we've got now.
Materials… I like being able to give the students something substantial.
The stuff we get from Kappelmann includes student guides and a disk with the
drawings or whatever we're working with (which they take home with them) and
an instructor guide. I don't have anything to give out for the 3-level R12
courses.
So again, I'd like to be able to buy courseware from Autodesk that would be
available pretty soon if not immediately after a new release. It would
include an instructor guide, student guides and diskettes and maybe little
help cards like you get with Wordperfect, Lotus, etc that shows you what the
function keys do, etc etc etc.
Anything like that on the horizon?

Thanks for the input Dave. My FAX number is 415-491-8337, give me a
mailing address to send a sample of our R12 Update Exercise set to you.
This product will be available to all dealers by the end of the month, as
they tell me here it will be up on OE (order entry) by that time. We will
be doing a large mailing to ALL dealers with samples of the finished
product, promo materials, etc. and it should go out next month.
You make some good suggestions for types of materials and ones we have
heard from others which tells us we are on the right track. YES there is
much of this kind of materials (and others) "on th horizon", however we are
still at the stage of putting together a detailed description of the
"vision" of where we are trying to go and how we see ourselves getting
there. This has been ongoing for several months now and my constant
seeking of ideas and opinions here on the forum is but one of the many ways
and sources I am tapping to collect such info. I have talked to everyone I
can find both inside and outside the company, including users, developers,
authors, publishers, dealers, educators, instructors, etc. and we are
having a set of focus meetings in Nov. which should mark the transition
from information gathering to detailed plan development and implementation
strategies.
Now, in the meantime we have done our best to keep other projects moving
and these include the AutoCAD Simulator CBT project, the R12 Update
Exercise set and other materials in the Learning Resource Series, the
AutoCAD Certification and so on.

At this point in time I do NOT have a set of timelines for what is comming
and when, but will get this information out to all of you here as soon as
it is developed which should be in about a month. I realize you would like
it sooner (surprise, surprise!) but as you can appreciate this is a BIG
undertaking with far reaching effects, so we want to be sure to have
thought it through as well and comletely as possible so we can build upon a
good design and foundation.
Please keep the ideas, needs and critiques comming. We value and benefit
from such input.

Just got the latest ATC bulletin today and noticed, per your note here,
that the R12 Upgrade Exercise set is available for purchase. Is that NOW?
I've got an R12 class in two weeks, can I get my hands of X number of
copies that soon? If not I'll be doing some fast regurgitating and I just
don't want to. Finished the R12 book over the weekend, so it looks like
we're on schedule for a December AVA convention release date.
Anyway, how soon can I get 30 copies of the R12 exercises? And what is the
file name of the R12 drawings that go with them that are located in Lib. 9
is it? Is it like R12???.zip?

Hi Shoe! The R12 materials are scheduled to be up on OE by the end of the
month, but I can help get you a special set before then to help you out of
the bind.

OK, just sent the originals out the door to the copy house and am in the
process of making up the disks right now. Will send you one master disk
set and blank labels as we discussed.
What I would REALLY appreciate from you in return is open, honest, DETAILED
feedback from you and your students on these materials. EVERYTHING about
them that you can tell me would be MOST appreciated. Lack of compliance
could result in a pack of daffodil rooting St. Bernards, no let's make that
a pack of Vietnamese Pot-bellied pigs (better alliteration don't you
think?) paying an evening visit to your property!!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, If I am now the "star fleet commander" it
reminds me of a great thing I once say, I think on the Muppets show, called
"Pigs in Space." Not sure what that makes me, and NO you do NOT need to

There has been a lot of talk about curriculum and how to distribute it and
what to charge and how to get it written.
I just saw the New Sony CDRom databank. Portable and inexpensive. Why are
we wasting half the Canadian forest printing RGTs, why not just put 600mb
of materials on CD. Production cost is real low now and every AER could
have these on hand (Or in their pocket) to share with the teachers they are
calling on. They could sell the a CD player at the same time as the teacher
would have immediate need for it. Maybe this would be a good intro into the
school or business
Print 1000 and sell for $50.00 each. all lisp and other customization
could be on the disk. Include a file for Pagemaker, Ventura, Word (mac and
pc) etc on the disk with complete text of the TRG on it. It could be
easily fit to the instructors needs. This is the answer we need to save us
all from reinventing that wheel AGAIN and it would be accessable to all
with little time waste (Such as downloading the same thing on cis). The per
megabyte cost would be very low with the CD technology.
ON CIS—-CIS is aging. The cable people are lining this country witha
fiber wide band net nd will soon have a service very similar but it will be
multimedia in nature. Does any here know of what else lies ahead.
