toaster not responding
16 messages in this thread
Every once in a while i get the green screen flash and toaster will not
respond, boot. It's no big deal, i just reboot and usually it wil boot on
second attempt, sometimes it takes three times to boot. But it's very
selfdom and it does not disturb me. But, I'm just curious, is there a
common reason for the toaster not to respond. Also every once in a while,
very seldom, it boot o.k., but the frame stores look as if there was 1/2 of
information missing. they flash with what i would describe "white
dropouts". All i have to do is reboot and it's fine. why is that happening?
would appreciate some word of wisdom on this. thank's, george delfin

George, the most common reason for TNR is the toaster not liking the sync
feeding input one. Try booting with no signal. Look in the manual under
trouble shooting. There are plenty of suggestions in there. If none of that
works, call TechSupport and maybe we can uncover the problem.

George,
I'll bet you have not hooked up any sources to the Toaster yet, right? I
had a Toaster like that and ran for months in 0-source mode. Then I
hooked up a camera to it and it would not synch up at all. I had to send
the Toaster back to NewTek. They sent me a replacement and there is no
green screen problem or any of the other symptoms. I'm afraid you need a
new Toaster.

well, i'm not sure i need a new toaster. have been using it with two source
inputs, a/b etc, for almost a year through an av-5. had a good tbc alta
cygnus 5.5 all along but it was useless since it's single line. only now i
purchased a dps, genlocked to alta, and only since then i am experiancing
toaster not booting green screen. but it's very seldom. feeding black burst
to input one, and i bet toaster does not like it every once in a while.
it's a Horita black burst/ bars generator. I'm not sure how stable it is.
I'm sure that's all it is. but, keep feeding info, i'm still learning and i
am a computer moron. I still have a hammer and a 9mm handy. depands how big
the problem is, that's what IT'S getting. thanks, george
George,
I am using Horita BSG50 as my "House synch" with no problems. Here is
another thought: You may need to "tune" the Toaster using the air cap on
its side. Do not attempt this with a metal device, or without talking to
Toaster Tech support first. It is the only adjustment on the Toaster and
if not done properly can make it so the thing will never synch.
It used to be that any Toaster having green screen problems would be
replaced by NewTek. They swapped mine in 3 days (Overnihgt to them,
overnihgt back). Give them a call. It may take two or three calls to
convince them it is not your system.

I never had problems before, til now that i added a dps and changed
configuration how channel one on the toaster is getting sinc. I have a
feeling that it is the black burst. Before sending to newtek, i will switch
over and feed bars. i'l see if that will make a differance. thanks for the
reply, i'l keep you posted. george
George,
Are you looping the sync through the AVE-5?

Wayne,
I wouldn't say right off the bat that George needs a new Toaster. In
almost all cases, Toaster Not Responding messages are due to bad or uneven
sync going to the Toaster.

Assume I sent my Toaster back, was repaired and returned. I triple checked
my connections in a production environment and still got TNR. How about if
the production room (being banished to the far reaches of the studio) is a
COLD room, say down to 60 degrees F at night. When I come in the morning I
must turn on the Amiga for 30-45 minutes before I can boot the Toaster w/o
TNR. Is there a problem with temperature drift in Toaster components?
Anyone else had a similar problem?
Thanks for any comments/suggestions
Can't help you there. My room has a tendency to be hot. There is no AC,
so when I can't get colder outside air fanned in, the temp is about 85-90
in my suite. This is only a problem for july aug and sept, tho…

Randy, sounds like it could be condensation, if your relative humidity is
anything around 80% or higher, a larrge temp swing like 10 degrees or so
from warm to cool will bring "dew" on components. This may account for your
problem. Try a dust cover, it may help the situation.
Thanks for the reply on relative humidity, cool temmps and TNR, this may be
it. I'll try the dust cover (electric blanket…) Knew I should have
stayed back in the great SouthWest.
Randy,
I have had a Toaster installed for about 15 months in an Amiga 2000
equipped with a GVP Series II 030 33 MHz accelerator. The Toaster will
never boot up when the computer is cold. (I get green screens and "Toaster
Not Responding" messages if I try and boot up the Toaster cold.) If I
allow the computer to run for about 5 minutes, the Toaster will boot up
every time on the first attempt. Obviously, at least in my Toaster there
is a temperature dependent component. I have not attempted to have the
Toaster repaired, because this is an easy problem to work around.

Sounds like Toaster has a conventional crystal oscillator on board and
might benefit from a temperatore compensated crystal oscillator.

George,
I had the same problem with not being able to input video to the Toaster
and have it work. On the Toaster board itself, directly above the word
"Toaster" is a small adjustable capacitor. I hooked everything up,
including cameras, fired up the Amiga, and adjusted it to perfection with
the capacitor, due to some good advice gotten by E-Mail from another forum
member.

thank's for the advice, however i would not touch it without a waveform,
since the problem is only seldom. would not see what i'm anjusting. i do
have a underscan/crosspulse monitor, but i don't think it's enough to see
what i would be looking for. thanks, george
