Rich, Right you are! Although Philips makes the Kodak player, it is really more of an "XA" drive. There has been a recent announcement to allow the Kodak drive to support audio (it will play normal CD audio right now) but the new announcement was to interleave sound with the photos. That sounds like an "XXA", extended-extended-architecture. When Kodak realizes that most people will opt for the full CD-I instead of just a "picture" player, there may be a cat fight! Rgds Jan

Jan, > Although Philips makes the Kodak player, it is really more of an "XA" drive. The Kodak Photo CD player is NOT an XA drive. It will NOT output digital information to a computer. The Kodak Photo CD player is a home entertainment device that does two things: 1. plays all existing audio CDs to a stereo system 2. plays Photo CD images to a TV It has three video outputs, all of which are analog only: RF, composite, and S-Video (these are slightly different in Europe, but the concept is the same). The recent announcements we made were that you will be able to add sound to Photo CD discs, beginning next year. Existing Photo CD players already can play such discs. In fact we pack one with every player that contains instructions on how to use the player features, in six languages. Hope this helps with what I know is a very confusing subject. Regards … Paul

Well, interleaving text with pictures (and, by the way sound and video) is not "XXA." That is precisely what the XA spec was designed to do. Kodak's recent announcements are only implementing the capability of the format that has been there all along. Rich

However, it's my understanding the Photo CD supports Red-Book audio only. Am I wrong? William Volk

Don't know about Red book only for Photo-CD, although it seems logical at this stage. Perhaps Paul McAfee will see this an respond; I'll ask around. Rich Bowers
