#Philips Portable CD-XA

There are so many platforms under consideration by the consumer electronics
companies that it's quite a interesting situation. Time will tell…

William,
Aye, it's an interesting mess right now 🙂
I think that while CD-based PDAs don't require one standard to become
popular, a mass consumer distribution media does.
Btw, I've been meaning to say something to you: of all the people who post
on Multimedia forum, I listen closest to your messages. I think you've got
a more level view than any of the rest of us.

Thanks. I've allways felt that the original premise of CD-I "A single
media standard" was a good goal. I believe had CD-I been released in '88
(as originally planned), that it would have had a clean shot at that
standard. Of course the showing of DV-I at the CD-ROM conference in '87
compelled CD-I to go for full-motion video, hence the delays.
Now we will have to let various formats duke it out in the marketplace for
the next 3 or 4 years. One thing I've learned from my videogame experence
at Activision, the winner will NOT be based solely on technical advantages.
There's a whole lot more to a successful platform.

Yah; in retrospect, waiting for FMV was a mistake on Philips' part.
I agree that technical advantages don't always mean much to consumers…
witness the popularity of VHS, the Commodore 64 and the IBM PC. But it'd
be nice if everyone chose a little better this time around 🙂
Personally, I think that all the standalone player makers have missed one
huge note: if they'd add the ability to also hook the player up as a
CD-ROM drive via SCSI to any computer, it'd sell like hotcakes to those of
us who're always looking for an excuse to get something new 🙂 🙂

I think the new Turbo Technologies Video Game CD does just that.
In the case of the VIS, you should be able to run the VIS titles under
Windows with some sort of "shell", at least that's what I heard.
