#Sony/Media Vision Sound
6 messages in this thread
For you Sony Laser Library or 535 owners: I installed Media Vision's
special new Pro Audio Spectrum Plus with the Sony interface for the Laser
Library CDROM built-in. After about 20 hours of experimenting, rewarded
only by a few functioning moments, the sound is wonderful; but there is no
video or it's *very* unstable. Apparently there is a bug that MV has just
discovered that exists in faster 486 systems, but they don't know whether
it's in the software, hardware or in the Laser Library drive itself yet.
If you get sound, the ability to play audio CD's and the audio portions of
multimedia CD's, and if the installation went OK otherwise — including
having the three drivers load OK — and if you can copy a data file from
the CD to another drive and have the two files compare OK, you're a victim.
MV is awaiting parts from Sony to begin diagnosing the problem. No idea
when there may be a fix, but they're taking names and numbers.
Not to discourage you, but had a similar experience beta tesing the Trantor
upgrade to the Laser Library (designed for users that want to keep their
existing controller). This upgrade is supposed to enable a pre-fetch
buffer that brings the LL up to MPC specs. It is apparently already built
into the MV/Sony board. In my case, I was trying to get this thing working
in concert with a separate MV PAS-16 board.
After hours of frustration, it became pretty apparent that the PAS-16 and
upgraded Sony controller did not want to coexist. It's acting like there
are DMA channel conflicts (however, it tried every combination possible to
avoid this). I'm certain that Trantor is busily working to get this going,
but I have to wonder whether the problem you've encountered is not the same
thing that I've seen.
At any rate, I threw my hands in the air, sold off the Laser Library and
purchased a Texel drive to work with the SCSI interface on my PAS-16.
Works like a charm. For the sake of the thousands of LL users out there, I
hope Sony, Trantor, and MV can collectively get their act together. I
sense an armed rebellion in the making.
Regards, Jerry
Thanks for the comments; I couldn't agree more! Unfortunately, I suspect
that the Trantor connection is alive and well and waiting to bite me cuz
they wrote the new Sony/MV driver. I hope all concerned can get the beast
to work, but where Sony's involved…
Thanks again!
Kevin,
I just rec'd the MV PAS+ for the Sony LL and I'm having a terrible time
with it. None of the LL series discs work with it. The problems I'm having
semm similar to yours:
-OK on audio, but no video. The discs try to load and just get
hung up; I have to reboot
-I'v gotten the mammals disc to run, I thought – the video
started to split up as I used it more
-I can't see to run any CD's right off the disc – I get messages
like 'bad command', but i can use type to read any text
file on it
The sound part of it is excellent.
But greatly dissatisfied with this product after waiting almost a year for
it to arrive. I talk to Mv on Monday.
BTW my system is a 386/33, so the problem is not just with 486's.
I'll let you know if I learn anything.
Len
Len,
Have you left a message about this in Media Vision's section in the
Multimedia Vendor Forum (GO MULTIVEN)?
Nick
Nick,
Yes I have left a message at mv. I was hoping that Kevin Kelly had some
info on the problem.
