#Serial Printing Won't

HI,
I am trying to hook up a HP500C via the serial port but I have been
completely unsuccessful. Naturally, I set printer prefs to serial, set
the serial prefs to match the printer and checked that the connection were
ok.
If I print from Turbotext I get a "Object is is Use" message. If I print
from the CLI (ie. COPY [FILENAME] TO SER: OR TO PRT: or using the print
command) it will be busy for a few moments but nothing will happen.
Printing from other applications also results in nothing. I have used
XOper to see if the Printer.Device is used and it is however the printer
has no indication that it is receiving data.
I have also tried by booting off of the original WB floppies to make sure
there isn't a s/w conflict or sum'thin'. I tried different serial
settings and cables but to no avail.
It would seem to me that it isn't possible to print to the serial port
even though the printer prefs supports it. What am I doing wrong?
Please help if you have any ideas.

Are you sure the cable is correctly wired?

Nope. Werner just pointed out that the cable has to be special and I was
using a standard Modem cable.

my HP550C is hooked up to one of the serial ports an it works just fine.
Make sure you got the right cable, which is not the same that you would
use for a modem.
AMIGA (2) TxD -> RxD (3) HP500/550/560

Ahh, so that is why! Ok, thanks. Unfortunately, I lost the printer
manual and wasn't able to check if it need to be a special cable. I will
see if I can order one. I suspose it is expensive, huh?
Perhaps you can confirm something. We have two Amigas here and I was
thinking that I'd have one hooked up to the parallel port and the other to
the serial port. I asked HP tech support when I got the printer and at
that time they saw no reason why it wouldn't work. Have you ever tried
that?

well, I made the cable by myself. Due to what I could possibly have earned
otherwise during the time I made it, so yes, it was very expensive… <g>

I never tried this one, because my Amigas are (Ether-)networked. But it
should work, because the HP500 requires no special settings to select the
port the data come from. What will happen, however, if you try to print
from both machines simultaneously, I can't tell…

I know what you mean. I made a ParNet Cable once and it took me quite a
while and I almost ended up ruining it. I will buy them from now on if
possible.

Hopefully no sparks! <G> I'd ecpect not much except perhaps having to
reprint each document. The two computers are in adjacent so all that is
require is a shout that printing is taking place (currently we shout to
switch the switch-box).

I'd love to have a ethernet but the cost isn't justified. I did have a
ParNet but I am paranoid about blowing my CIAs so I don't use it anymore
(as Amiga parts are more scarce these days).
