"Montage" Problems

We bought MONTAGE soon after publication. Good program! It was
installed in our Amiga 2000 – running the TOASTER Ver:2.0 Worked
fine.
We now have got the Toaster "trade-up" – otherwise the Toaster 4000
board with the new software. Installed in the same old Amiga 2000.
Liking Montage – we tried to install it in the new setup. It
installed seemingly OK. On trying to start it from the
MONTAGE&SWITCHER icon – as we had done previously… nothing
happened! We did manage to get the Toaster started from its own
icon. On getting the Switcher panel…. NO little icon there for the
Montage.
What is wrong? Has anyone had the same problem? Will Montage ONLY
work with Toaster Ver 2.0? Have we wasted our money? Do we have to
get a "special" edition of Montage for it to work in our setup?
We faxed our problem to InnoVision. So far no reply. Glad of any
information, especially that which may give us some hope!

Do you have the latest version of Montage v.T1.01?
BTW- I'm running with Toaster 2.0, 3.0, and T4000.

Which version of Montage…. I just do not quite know. We got a version here
on 6/28/93. It was marked Version: T1.0 A few weeks later on 7/12/93 we got
from InnoVision a second set of disks. These again were marked Version T1.0,
but with a different serial number.
The latter set worked well on our Toaster 2.0 – and we liked results.
In changing to Toaster 4000 (in our Amiga 2000) we altered nothing – except the
Toaster card and the new software.
Montage loaded fine – no problems – into the Toaster partition. We got the
SWITCHER&MONTAGE icon OK. Clicking produced an IconX window. It read [CLI
5]… and there it stuck. Had to reboot.
Tried the use of CLI (as per the Manual – Page 54). Again we got the IconX
window. This time it said:-
[CLI5]
switcher: Unknown Command
switcher failed returncode 10
and there it stuck. Again had to reboot to get out of the mess.
so…… for now our clients will have to put up with the Toaster CG and its
large selection of so-so fonts!

Hilary, welcome to the club. I have the identical problems. o.k. with toaster
2.0, but with toaster 4000 card and 3.0 software inside a 2000 amiga, every
time i boot i have different problems. Try from cli the following: CD
MONTAGE:/
STACK 30000
MONTAGE /S then click on montage/toaster
crouton. then hit toaster crouton.
this works every once in a while. I have the latest montage rev. lots of
problems, yet some users claim running good. i have no clue. innovision tech
support has been nice but no results. would be intersting to know how many
users have good luck, and how many have problems. george

I did try going the CLI route (as per Manual page 54). It gave me a IconX
window, telling me: Switcher: unknown command
switcher failed returncode 10.
It then gave up and I had to reboot.
Tried the Montage icon. Produced a window telling me to startup Toaster
switcher. Did this and got the Switcher screen…. BUT… no Montage button.
If it was a $50 program would just give up on it. I paid PLENTY of bucks for
it. In return I would like it to work in my present Toaster 4000 residing in my
Amiga 2000.
InnoVision (Gene Buban) replied promptly to my cry for help. He suggested cause
was the earlier Version. Also suggested the CLI approach. Yesterday I FAX'ed
him back with the negative results.
If InnoVision can give me a fix which works, will most certainly share it with
anyone with similar problems. Until then…. just Toaster CG…

Which version … simple, first the ICONX window should read:
"MONTAGE version T1.01 for Toaster 2.0, 3.0 & T4000"
secondly the Montage opening screen should also note version 1.01.
Note: InnoVision sent the upgrade on just the first two disks which
also read T1.01.
I do agree that Montage is a but *temperamental*, at times all you
can do is re-install. I've been running it daily on my A4000 with a
needed warm reboot if I do alot of composing. There are things that
InnoVision still needs to correct.
If you have v1.01 double check the assigns. There are two files. One
in your users-startup which directs Montage to where the program
normally resides in your Toaster directory (the defaults). The other
is in XXX:Toaster/Montage!, this one contains the users changes.
These have to be correct.
On my system, the Toaster and Montage's main program are on DH2. On
DH1: I have MTPIX, MTSEQ, MTFONTS, FrameStores, and
:ToasterFonts/Oldfonts & :ToasterFonts/Colorfonts. ( Also on v1.01
you no longer have the choice to use Amiga fonts. )

I am probably stupid…. but the only way I get the IconX window is
when I click Montage&Switcher icon. The window appears but only says
IconX at the top. After a short while it writes [CLI 5] inside the
window and STOPS!
If I use the CLI approach, I again get the IconX window, but this time
it adds the despairing comments "switcher: unknown command"…
followed by "switcher failed returncode 10"… and STOPS!
I got Montage in June/July. It installed and ran perfectly on our
Amiga 2000, then running Toaster Ver:2.0 The problem started when
we did an upgrade of the same computer by changing board to Toaster
4000 and Software Ver:3.0
Have been in FAX contact with the good folk at InnoVision and sent
them all the details they requested. Presently waiting for their
advice and counsel, which hopefully will correct things.
Will take a look at the "Assigns" in user-startup. Will let you know
what I find there. At the moment have a hunch that Montage is fine in
the Amiga 2000 with Toaster 2.0 It also seems OK in the Amiga 4000
with Toaster 4000 and 3.0 software, as in your case. The problem
seems to be with the Amiga 2000 – with Toaster 4000 and 3.0 software.

Try e-mailing Tom Patrick. He hangs around the AMIGAART forum in the DeskTop
Video section. His address is "Tom Patrick-InnoVision T 72212,1103. I have
found him to be very cooperative, but it didn't solve my problems with the
program.
When I first bought the prog I got version 1.0 and you certainly need ver 1.01.
I have it working with Toaster 3.0, but I haven't managed to get ARexx control
over it with T-Rexx Pro. Could be my knowledge of ARexx is too limited. It
also has touble handling very large Framestore directories: program hangs every
time. If you are running both Toaster 2.0 and 3.0 you need to do separate
installations on separate drives or partitions and set up two versions of your
user-startup file to run depending on what version you are working with. All a
bit convoluted and inconvenient, but possible. If you are using any kind of
edit controller to call up your CG pages in Montage with an EDL, let me know
now you did it.
