I opened up my newest catalog from MACWarehouse today and saw this ad.
Here are the particulars on an interesting product.
Looks like 14.4 FAX/modems are getting cheaper than ever. In fact this is
less than my first 300/1200 baud modem cost!

A call to the order desk got me the information that it is FAX send/receive
capable by just adding the software. So I would think GPFax would work with
it. It is also backordered right now. Wonder why? <grin>

Sounds like it is worthy of a looksee, got one ordered, will report on
it once it arrives and I take it for a test drive on the CIS 14.4
node nearby.
There's been a Usenet go-around about those modems. The general
consensus is that they're a good deal. The modems are supposedly
manufactured locally, which is why they sell so cheap.
Can you look in your Macwarehouse catalogue and see if you can dig up a local
number for this please? 800 numbers don't work from Europe and usually one can
find a number with the local area code. Would appreciate it as this offer
sounds irresistible. Thks in advance

Still looking for another non-800 voice number…
Nope, there isn't any other number in the catalog, other than the 800 number.
Best bet, use CIS to order from MACWarehouse.
I'll try and call their 800 number and see if there is another number available
for international calls.

Whoops! I made a typo in earlier post. Use the GO COMMAND, G MW, not MACW to

I guess you don't need this information now… but maybe in the future. You can
call 800 numbers in the US by calling AT&T USA Direct or MCI. I can give you
the access numbers if you tell me what country you are in. The call isn't free,
you can charge it to a calling card (which is free to get in Europe) or charge
to your credit card. It costs about $1.09/min (which is cheaper than calling
direct usually), and there is an initial charge of $4.50.
So.. in the future.. if the only number you have is an 800.. you still can get
through.

Just to jump on the bandwagon, I ordered one yesterday at 4pm EST. I had

How'd you get yours so quickly? I was told they were out-of-stock and
on backorder. Have you used it yet with CIS? How about the FAX? Have
you tried it with GPFax yet? I'd like to hear your comments on the
quality of this modem.

I ordered one Mon and was also told they were out of stock and on b/o.
Wed morning I went out to get the paper and there it was on the doormat,
so much for signature required..
Seems to work ok with CIS and my local user BBS, the only thing I
noticed was that on connecting to the BBS I get a connect 9600/REL instead
of a connect 9600. I have no idea what the /REL means, but then I'm no
expert on modems. The speaker volume when set to low still sounds loud to
me..
I'll bet it means "reliability mode", i.e. you are using a hardware
error detection sceme. One of either v.42, MNP 4, or MNP 5.
The /REL means that error correction is active. REL is short for
reliable, basically because the modems are using error correction the
line is considered reliable.
I think that they have different shipping centers. The NJ center
apparently had them in stock while the center nearest you has them on
backorder?
I have a ZyXEL I use for Fax, CIS, etc. I bought the new modem to
hang off my Unix box. So I haven't tried it with fax or CIS. With
one local BBS, it connected fine at 19.2. It only likes to connect
to my ZyXEL at 19.2 every fourth or fifth try when the ZyXEL
originates and the Line144e answers.
I hear the Supra modems sometimes have problems connecting at high
speeds — does any one have any suggestions for improving
connectability?
As far as overall quality of the modem, it's what I'd expect for $99.
It's not awful. If it weren't for the problem with connecting, it'd
be everything I could want in an inexpensive modem. If the connect
problem is only with AA, or if something that helps with the Supra
helps this one, I'd say it's an excellent deal.
I'll keep you up-to-date if I get any good information out of
technical support…
