#Imagine GigaMem
13 messages in this thread
Hi, Margeret!
I was told you might be using GigaMem successfully with Imagine. Can you
tell me what you did to get it to work? I have Imagine 3.0 . Thanks!
If you can't help, thanks anyhow.
Onto others reading this message:
Please! Anyone who is successfully using GigaMem to add more memory to
Imagine, please tell me the settings required. I use GigaMem mainly for
Imagemaster R/t, but I'd like to be able to use it with Imagine 3.0 .
Thanks for any help!

Vance,
I'm using Gigamem. At first it would not run and I could not figure
out why. Well after a hour of fooling around I noticed that the default
name for imagine in the gigamem program database was wrong. Check the
name in your database and make sure its the same as imagines on your
system. After that it works as advertised. (for the most part). I have
run into a memory limitation when trying to load all my objects into the
stage editor. I have too many and it uses all the memory in my system.
Apparently gigamem does not intercept the memory calls for loading objects
into the stage editor. It will use virtual memory to do the actual
rendering.
Thanks for the tips! *8^)

I have a very old version of Gigamem (2.1) and I don't think I've tested it on
Imagine 3.0. It did work with 2.9. Here is what I have in the Gigamem prefs:
menu, I have an entire partition set up as 'SWAP' ( I think I have 40 megs
there) on my Quantum drive, I have
1 for Buf mem, 300 for Cache mem, and only Virtual memory. I could never get
Imagine to work with regular memory first. Let me explain that my 500 has 7
megs of Ram but it is all over the place. It works but I think it is kind of
painfull to use with Imagine. I'd only use it if I was just short of the amount
of memory you really needed.
Thanks for thehelp, Margaret! I hope it'll work for me.

Keep trying different things, you'll get it.
Still no luck. It lets me use about 5 or so megs and then starts sucking
up all of the real memory.
Did you tinker with the advanced options at all? If so, what were they set
to?
I called tech support and they said they couldn't help me. So, I'm reliant
on any help from here.

Are you using a partition or a swap file ? I never could get the swap file to
do anything. Are you saying the computer dies because you have no memory at all
left and you get hung or what ?
I've used both a partition and a swap file and both worked with equal
results. The computer doesn't die, the real ram starts being used after 5
or so mb of virtual ram is used. Then when the memory runs out, I'magine
brings up the requester that there isn't any memory left.

Hmm…, what does the Amiga Workbench report before you start any rendering –
amount of Chip and Fast Ram. This is just a guess but it is acting like it
isn't recognizing your entire swap file as the virtual Ram. How large is your
partition ? Do you delete what is in the partition if Imagine dies on you ?
When I don't use my Gigamem, I reinit the partition and use it to store other
stuff. When I use Gigamem, I clean it out and only use it for that. Are you
putting other files in the partition – Gigamem wants it all for itself. Since I
only use a partition and I ask it to use Virtual Memory first, it never takes
my memory to start Imagine or keep other programs going. Does Imagine let you
exit the program gracefully when it reports it has no memory left? I've never
had it give me that requester – generally it just hangs. I had Imagine do that
after 4 days of running my computer night and day. It didn't do it during the
object load – just crapped out during a raytrace. I wasn't running Gigamem when
it did that.
Right now I'm using a swap file instead of the entire partition. It may be
slower but it's quicker to make room for other things. I have the swap
file set at 35mb… it goes down to about 28, then my real memory starts
getting pumped out instead.
Could you send a reply which includes your "GigaMem.pref" and
"GigaMem.Prefs" files? Here are my current settings.

The only other thing I can think of that is different, is that I have
mixed Page and Static RAM. Funny thing is, DPaint, PPaint, Imagemaster R/t
and more, seem to run on GigaMem without trouble. And when I hear that you
have it working with Imagine, it becomes more frustrating for me, because
I can really use it now.

This was a long time ago but I called the company that supports Gigamem in this
country to ask about problems I was having with the product. (wish I could
think of the company name – Innovatronics ?? ). Anyway, Imagemaster and DPaint
ask for and use additional memory in a different manner than Imagine. However
Imagine does it is similar to AdPro. The * only * solution for me was to run
those programs with a portion of your drive as a Partition not a Swap file. I
could never get Imagine to run without setting it to 'Virtual Memory Only'. I
gather you'd prefer not to have to mess with your drive and set up a partition
but that is all I can suggest that you do at this point. If you have any other
programs – even ones not on the 'Gigamem' list – try those too. I got Vertex to
work which is a model-generating program. I was able to create some very big
hoggy models that way. Of course, even with Gigamem running, I couldn't stand
waiting for them to render <g>.
I started using GigaMem with a full partition after installing GM. The
results are the same either way. Thanks for trying, anyhow. *8^)
