When trying to load a file in 3DS3 I get the message: "Abnormal Program termination: Memory Protection Fault. CS: EIP = 000Fh:000DF494h" This problem occured after I had not done any 3DS work for about a month, during which time I installed AutoCAD R12 and a couple other Windows applications on a new Pentium/ 90MHz machine. I cannot discern a change in the config.sys or autoexec.bat files that may be the cause for this. Please give me some advice

<<"Abnormal Program termination: Memory Protection Fault.>> You are experiencing a memory conflict. Strip your system down to files, buffers, prompt, and mouse and reboot. 3DS should work in this config. Now add the lines back in to your start up files one at a time until you identify which one is causing the conflict. -Brian

Brian: I tried to use the original config.sys/autoexec.bat. Wouldn't they presumably contain a configuration that worked when I was running 3DS with no problem? It didn't affect the problem I am getting.

<< Wouldn't they presumably contain a configuration that worked when I was running 3DS with no problem?>> Probably, but not guaranteed. As you found out. Strip the system to files and buffers. Does it work? -Brian

Brian: I stripped the system to what I think was basics: config.sys autoexec.bat ——————————————————————————- ——– dos=high c:\dos\smartdrv.exe /x device=c:\dos\himem.sys path=c:\dos; files=40 set temp=c:\temp buffers=20 set mouse=c:\mouse shell=c:\dos\command.com /p/e:1024 c:\mouse=mouse stacks=9256 It didn't change. Am I missing something else that might be offensive to 3DS from above? Is it possible that there is something else the cause?

<<Is it possible that there is something else the cause?>> Yes, most of it. Config.sys files=40 buffers=20 Autoexec.bat prompt=$p$g Thats it. All you need. Go to this configuration and tell me if it still shows the same behavior. -Brian

Brian: I retained what you suggested. Didn't work. (I actually had to include the line for the mouse driver). I wonder if a corrupted file might be causing this – Do you have any other suggestions? As I said the program used to work fine last time, before I dealt with installing a few other applications. I still can work, but cannot "Load" from the File lull-down menu Tell what else to try thanks

Nicholas, If you are running with only Files=, buffers=, and your mouse, and you still get the error, then the possibilites fall to harware and file problems. It could be a corrupted file as you mentioned. Try re-installing the software from the original diskettes. It could be running into a bad RAM chip. Run diagnostics on your system. It could be the hard disk, check for lost disk allocation files, defragment your hard disk, look for bad sectors, and run a virus scanner. Now the serious detective work begins… -Brian

Nicholas, I just ran into the same problem with my new Acer Pentium. 3DS worked fine the first day, but as I put in some new stuff it stopped with the same error you got. Close reading of the docs say that you shouldn't use the NOEMS setting in EMM386, which I've used for the last couple years. I made myself a 3DS setup (what a pain) and everything is fine again. Ken

It's perfectly fine to use NOEMS. In fact that's the only way I use as I hate losing 64k of high memory for EMS which is totally obsolete. All you got to do is add FEMS to the QEMM command line.

Gus, Aha! You're using QEMM. Unfortunately, I'm still stuck with EMM386, although it's always worked pretty well for me in the past. I did discover that you really shouldn't use the DOS 6.2 MEMMAKER utility, though. It not only messes up 3D Studio but I got more free memory by arranging things myself. Next week I'm going to switch to QEMM – I've heard nothing but good stuff about it. Ken
