#Scaling SXP's

Anybody know how to get the effects of procedural textures to scale the way you want? I am using the default units as feet and building 'rooms' of typical dimensions, 40x60x12 etc. My SXP textures are too large. Should I scale the structures up, reset the xform, then scale back down? What's the 'normal' way to do this? Thanks! Max Elliott Sibling Interactive

Max, << What's the 'normal' way to do this? >> What happens when you click on the "S" next to the SXP name in the Material Editor and modify the size parameter for the SXP? Does this give you the effect that you are looking for..?

Well, in MARBLE_I.SXP for example, the size parameter can be adjusted to make the sample look nice, but that never seems to correlate to the geometry in the scene. How big is the 'sample' sphere? How does the mapping on it relate to the mapping in the 'real world'? Can I change the mapping of the sample sphere to be representative of the object size in 'real world' units? Which SXP's are you using ? Mike White [SDP]

Marble, for example. When I tweak the size, it has an effect on the resulting image, but by the time I've tweaked it to the correct size, it no longer shows anything useful in the sample, just funky fuzzy stripes. Is there some way to control the scale of the sample image so that samples are representative of geometry? Thanks, Max Elliott Sibling Interactive

PMJI, Max, but if the scale of your scene and/or object is making it difficult to see the .SXP effect in Medit, you could try this. In the 3D Editor, do a Render Object on the object with the .SXP material. Then go to Medit and adjust the .SXP. With Auto Put on, do a Render Last. This will automatically re-render just the object with the .SXP material using the the scale and lighting of your scene, and should quickly help you dial in that .SXP material. Have fun, -Alan

If your using SXP's you'll want to set the sizing by clicking on the S next to the texture. This is where you control the scaling of the SXP's. S is for settings. When you scale the obect in the 3d editor the SXP's cords will not change so you have to go to the material editor and scale to the proper sizing. One thing in the key framer if you scale the object the texture cords of the SXP's will not change. So you might want to size you objects in the key framer. Mike White [SDP]

Thanks for the response guys! I guess it's just down to using 'Render Last' with Auto Put to get the scaling right. I suppose my 'problem' is more of a wish list item anyway. If I ever figure out what the deal is with changing the default 'units' parameter from inches to feet and then loading a .3ds file vs loading the file and _then_ changing the units, I'll make a post with the explanation. Until then, I'm just going to wing it. Happy Rendering… Max Elliott Sibling Interactive
