HI Betty and Jim. Thanks for the ideas. Here's what I'm finding. I typed More s: User startup and got–Can't open file The printer driver in Prefs says "Generic" with Parallel, Pica, 6 lines, draft and narrow tractor settings. My Serial setting is ok. My modem is already set to RTS/CTS. To the command Install HDO:Check I got the message–Please insert volume HDO in drive. Then when I typed More S:Startup-sequence if got these lines—!! $VER:startup-sequence 39.9(9.8.92) C:SetPatchQUIET C:Version>NIL: C:Add Buffers>NIL:DFO:15 Fail At 21 C:MakeDir RAM:TRAM:Clipboards RAM:ENV RAM:ENV/sys C:Copy>NIL:ENVARC:RAM:ENV ALL NOREQ Resident>NIL:C:Assign PURE Resident>NIL:C:Execute PURE Assign>NIL:ENV:RAM:ENV Assign.NIL:T:RAM:T Assign>NIL:Clips:RAM:Clipboards Assign>NIL:REXX:S: Assign:NIL:RRINTERS:DEVS:Printers Assing>NIL:KEYMAPS:DEVS:Kaymap LOCALE:SYS:locale LIBS:SYS:Classes ADD HELP:LOCALE:HELP DEFER IF NOT EXISTS SYS:Fonts Assign FONTS: END IF Bind Drivers C:Mount NIL:DEVS:DOS Drivers/(#$info) If Exists DEVS:Monitors If Exists DEVS: Monitors/VGA only DEVS:Monitors/VGA only end if C:list>NIL:DEVS:Monitors/(#$infoivgr only)To T:M/Format"DEVS: monitors/#s" Execute T:M C:Delete>NIL:T:M End if Set Env Workbench$Workbench Set Evn Kickstart $ Kickstart UnSet Workbench UnSet Kickstart C:I Prefs C:ConClip Path>NIL:RAM:C:SYS:Utilities SYS: Rexxc SYS:System$:SYS: Prefs SYS:WBSstartup SYS:Tools SYS:Tools/Commodities IF Exists $:User-Startup Execute S:User-STartup END IF Resident Execute Remove Resident Assign Remove C:LOAD WB END CLI>NIL: AND THAT'S THE MESS IVE GOT IN MY FILES. Joan … Betty has just flitted off to Europe. She may be out of touch for a day or so due to jet lag, but I'm sure you'll be hearing from her. About that INSTALL HD0: CHECK thing .. be sure that you are using a NUMERIC ZERO, not a letter O, when you type it, and do put the spaces in place. Your file s:startup-sequence looks as if it is in good order, at first glance, so after you do the INSTALL HD0: CHECK, you may well be ready for the next step. If the response is 'No bootblock installed', then we're gonna install one by typing INSTALL HD0: (this time without the word CHECK). If you get some response other than 'No bootblock…', come on back and tell about it. I am a little concerned that a virus has been trying to meddle with your bootblock, and after we fix things it may try again. One of our early priorities is to get a good virus checker into your hands. By the way, how much memory do you have on your Amiga? If you're not sure, command AVAIL and tell us what response you get. –Jim

Joan, It appears that you DO have a valid S:Startup-sequence, since you just read it and copied it for us. It does appear that you don't have a user-startup, but you can work without one for a while until we get you going. Then you can create one that will customize your system for you. I see that Jim has answered your message. Just do what he said, so we won't be giving you slightly different (and therefore confusing) instructions. He's the best.
