Anyone, I need to create long and short hair/fur on an animal in 3D. Am I able to do this in 3D Studio or do I need a different package or am I stuck? Any suggestions or comments, whatsoever, is greatly appriciated. Thanks, Mike C.

The simplest and most-effective way to do fur in 3DS is to make a shell around your object (basically, the object scaled up so that the shell is the height that you'd like the fur to be). Next, use a texture and opacity map to map a matte fur-like texture to the shell, with highly varigated opacity so that the skin is still visible in little holes through the shell. This creates a 3D spongy appearance which is about as close to fur as you're going to get. – G

I just read today that there is an IPAS called Scatter that will give me a hair-type effect. What would be different about this and the other method that you told me about? I need to create a dog with a lot of long, fluffy fur. Which method would you recommend? Thanks so much, Mike C.

Scatter is great for "bristling" effects, but I wouldn't use it for a dog with long, fluffy fur. For that, I'd use the opacity-map technique that I described earlier. It'll end up looking softer. – G
