#Word 6 and DTS

Has anyone had problems getting word 6 to work correctly if DTS is installed?
My version of word 6 will generate GPF's (general protection faults) if I enter
a CR (carriage return) between lines. It has this problem only on machines (my
office PC nad my portable) that has DTS installed. I'm really puzzled as to
what it is, perhaps a DLL that conflicts. Help would be appreciated.
By the way, i've done the ususal strip down of config.sys, and booted from a
floppy with a barebones config. Still i have the problem.

Wish I could tell you something that might help you solve your problem. But I
have been using both programs for a long time without problems. I was using
WinWord 2.0 when I got DTS. Subsequently I upgraded WinWord to 6.0 and now
6.0a. In fact I have a crude little WinWord macro (I understand someone is
writing and will post a spiffy one) that jumps out to the DTS address book,
allows me to find an entry and save the full address to the Windows clipboard,
then goes back and pastes it at the cursor position in my WinWord document.
I suspect you'll have to look elsewhere for your conflict. Good luck.

Yes, I loaded the 6.0a patch some time ago. Maybe there is a conflict in some
visual basic stuff on the machines. Thanks for your help…

I see someone else has mentioned that DTS and WinWord coexist quite happily.
In fact, I wrote the spiffy macro referred to in that other message, and DTS
and WinWord seem to work together beautifully (particularly if you're using my
macro<g>).
I think you're going to have to look elsewhere for the problem. Do you want to
explain the problem more fully? Have you downloaded to WinWord 6.0a patch?

The WinWord 6.0a patch is available in the WinWord forum. Careful which
version you dowbload, as there are versions for multiple different national
versions. What does it fix? To be honest, I can't remember, suffice it to say
that I have no problems with 6.0a, and it's always neat to have the latest and
greatest.

I happen to be browsing this thread and would like to know about your WinWord 6
macro. What is it and have you uploaded it for general use?

My WinWord/DTS template/macro is in the Okna library. It's named DTSW4W.ZIP,
and is experiencing a quite brisk download rate.
What does it do? Basically, if you start a new document based on the template,
a macro runs which pops up Address Book (whether or not it was running before),
and then pops up a dialog based on your selection which lists the home address
and business address of the current entry. At this point you can include,
exclude or modify any data. There are also user definable defaults for user
name and title, and the closing (Sincerely, etc.) and a variety of other
features, the most important probably being the ability the define all address
elements (for which four fields are provided). You may for example want to
display DTS' address lines as 1, 2, 3, or as 1, 3, 2, and then perhaps add the
country code by default. Or add some other field as the first line, followed
by three address elements. In fact, any valid DDE name can be added, even
custom fields. Then you select whether you want to use the Home or Business
address, hit OK, and depending on the defaults you have selected, your document
gets built from the ground up barring letterhead, which I assume most people
will want to build themselves; it is a template, after all.
It's a neat macro, based on a version for WordPerfect that has been downloaded
literally hundreds of times from various forums (the WinWord version has been
downloaded 50 or so times in this library in the last week alone). From the
feedback I'm getting, it seems to do its job and to be useful. So if you have
WinWord 6.0 or later and DTS 4.0c with BOOK.EXE dated September 1 '93 or later,
give it a go; can't hurt.
There'll be a new version for WinWord in November, following the release of the
new WordPerfect (both macros will be released together, will have the same
'product' name, will be functionally identical, will have many more features,
including drop down combo boxes, plus 30 or so user-definable elements, etc.
The WordPerfect version is pretty much finished, and I'll finish the WinWord
version in the next week or so.)

FYI,
The current version is WinWord 6.0c. (There wasn't a 6.0b. Microsoft tweaked
each of the MS Office 4.2 applications and gave them "c" extensions.) The "c"
revisions are not "patches". Contact Microsoft customer service for these
versions. As I recall, you only pay shipping charges. If you have MS Office,
get the 4.2c update to office (20 diskettes – yuck!) rather than the individual
updates.

Anything good in 6.0c, or is it a bug fix? (To be honest, I've never
encountered any bugs in 6.0a, but then I don't use it as often as I use WPWin.)
20 diskettes for MS Office 4.2c? Hah, that's nothing! PerfectOffice
Professional 3.0 apparently requires up to 130mb HD space, and I'm going to
install every inch of it. Of course, I'll be getting the CD version…

We use Word 6.0 as the dominant word processor in the office here, and we
haven't had any problems. Contact Microsoft about the GPF's.

As others have noted, DeskTop Set and WinWord 6 are cohabitating nicely on all
of our machines here at Okna as well. What GPF's are you getting specifically?
Have you tried contacting Microsoft? Have you upgraded to 6.0a?
Following are some general solutions for solving GPF's that might help too.

General Protection Fault errors – Common Solutions:
If you are consistently getting a General Protection Fault Error, try the
following. 1. Check that your Windows system resources are not getting low by
selecting Help/About…from the Program Manager main menu. If they are, try
closing some of your other applications and see if this solves your problem. 2.
Try exiting and re-entering Windows 3. Sometimes you will get general
protection fault errors if the executable file named in the error message is
corrupt. Try reloading the appropriate application, usually Windows or DeskTop
Set. To update your DeskTop Set program files, place your original diskette
in your floppy disk drive and select File/Run… from Program Manager. Type
a:\install (or b:\install). When the DeskTop Set Update dialog box opens,
click Update. This will overwrite all of your DeskTop Set program file (*.exe,
*.dll, etc.) with the originals. This procedure will not affect your data in
any way. Refer to your Windows manual for instructions on how to reload
Windows. Again, this procedure will not affect your Windows setup in any way.
It will simply overwrite the existing program files with the originals. No
data files or editable setup files will be affected.
4. If you continue to have problems, please call the Okna Tech Support
