This may sound simple but all I want to do is place the dimples of a golf ball on a sphere so that they are not stretched or scaled… ANY IDEAS… THANKS

I HAVE DONE BUMP MAPS BUT WHEN APPLIED SPHERICALLY, CYLINDRICALLY, OR PLANAR THE DIMPLES GET STRETCHED. THANKS FOR THE REPLY, CAN YOU HELP FURTHER?

There's a GIF file out there that will do the trick as a bump map. -dave

Shawn, >> dimples of a golf ball on a sphere << we had a competition at our user group to do this. it was a long time ago but the best solution was by David Carroll who created a bumpmap in some paint package (dpaint possibly) where the dimples were progressively scaled as they reached the poles. this counterracts the distortion that would otherwise occur when applying a cylindrical map onto a sphere.

You have no doubt found that spherical mapping (seemingly perfect for a golf ball) bunches up the map at the poles, while a true goolf ball is consistent – correct? Try this instead – loft a semicircle (as a surface of revolution) with mapping coordinates ON. While this still won't be perfect, it will be a lot closer. – Phil

Hi all, I also wanted (During the soccer World Cup) to create a soccer ball and was unable to that without purchasing from Viewpoint. Tho.. I am still very interested . Any suggestions? -Kouros.
