>> some features … that we … can't get? << I don't think so. Which reatures are you talking about? You *will* be able to have your own home page as early as next month in case you hadn't heard. Also, you can have a real name of your choosing, say, paulidol@compuserve.com instead of 76375.1776@compuserve.com! I'd better post the press releases on that: —-Forwarded Message(s)—- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Jeff Shafer CompuServe Incorporated (614) 538-4632 Deanna Leung CompuServe Internet Division (206) 442-8231 Build Your Own Home…On The Web: Free CompuServe Wizards Help Members Build A Community On The Web COLUMBUS, Ohio, Sept. 11, 1995 — The World Wide Web is no longer the exclusive domain of big companies and technology hounds. CompuServe members will soon be able to claim their own spot in cyberspace using a new service that lets even novice computer users design, build and submit their very own personal home pages on the Web. CompuServe will offer the Home Page Wizard and Publishing Wizard, unique authoring and submission tools that make publishing on the Web easier than ever. The Home Page Wizard(TM) – No Technical Experience Needed The Home Page Wizard uses advanced technology to eliminate many of the hassles associated with designing and submitting a "home page," the document on the Web that people access for information on certain topics. It offers drag and drop editing, templates and helpful hints to help design attractive, personalized home pages. It provides the ability to add hotlinks that can jump to any other site on the Web, the ability to insert images and numerous other features. "Home Page Wizard offers unprecedented access to the Web. It eliminates the difficult technical jargon and the complex submission process in order to offer the fun and value of the Web," said David Pool, executive vice president for CompuServe's Internet Division. "Anyone who wants to stake their claim on the Internet frontier can do so with CompuServe's Home Page Wizard." Once members design their pages, they can automatically test it in the browser of their choice to ensure that it looks exactly how they intended. CompuServe is also providing a way for users who wish to scan their pictures. Members can simply mail them to a service which will return the image on disk to members for use in their Web page. The Publishing Wizard(TM) – Easy, Instant Publishing on the Web With the click of a button, another tool called Publishing Wizard(TM) will beam the completed page out onto the Web, where Net surfers around the world can immediately visit CompuServe members in their new Internet home. The Publishing Wizard obtains the member's personal URL (http:// compuserve.com/home/USER'S NAME) and also offers unique flexibility that lets users upload other HTML files so they can build a home page using other popular authoring tools. The Result – An Home-Made Web Community of CompuServe Members Once members have created their home page, they can submit it to CompuServe's Web community. This will be a collection of home pages created by CompuServe members. This community will be searchable so that users can find home pages based on a variety of topics. For example, members can search for other individuals who have posted information about dogs, people named Smith or cooks who have posted great recipes for chicken on their home page. "CompuServe can help a family rendezvous on the Web for an electronic reunion or it can enable a writer to post a story for others to read in cyberspace," Pool noted. "We're extending the already vibrant CompuServe community by bringing it together with today's popular Web technology. This puts a personal spin on what can be a very impersonal medium which is important as we become a society of online communication." Pricing and Availability CompuServe's Home Page Wizard and Publishing Wizard software will be available free to all CompuServe members. Beta testing will begin in late September and the service will be in production in November. The Web community service will be open to anyone on the Internet. As part of the $9.95 monthly CompuServe membership, members will be able to create home pages up to 1 megabyte in size. Neil- For home pages and the like, we Amigans are SOL, unless we have PCs. Btw, do you know who we should call/email about personal email names? (Fighting a severe and unexpected desire to register as Zombie@compuserve.com <g>) Mr. Zombie

Paul, CIS is not quite ready to start giving out the personal email names yet. When the time is right, they will announce it and will tell you how to reach the right person. I suspect it will be a GO XXXXX instruction, and when you get there, there will be a brief questionnaire for you to fill out. Should be soon, but not yet. —Betty

PMFJI, but there is an add-on for FW to let you do the HTML thing. I've not tried but maybe there is a www.zombie.compuserve.com in the future 😉 Steve Brightman Daring to be different – Amiga on the Internet – Lotus on the Interstate

Just FYI… I don't think an you'll be locked out of having your own Home Page on CompuServe if you don't have a Windows box. The software that CompuServe provides is called "Home Page Wizard" (or something like that) that only runs under Windows (no Mac, no OS/2, no Amiga, no BeBox <grin>, etc.), and, well, frankly, it stinks. They give you some nice backgrounds to choose from, but it is a very limited program whose only real exposure to writing HTML is only in passing. I ended up creating my own page writing HTML code by hand and completely tossing what this "wizard" generated, so, you can do the same on the Amiga or use one of the HTML document creation tools available for the Amiga. Also, shortly, you'll be able to have "license plate" user IDs … I don't know when this will be offered to the public ("RSN" if it's not already available) but mine's sja@cis.compuserve.com or, using CMail, CIS:SJA. -Steve Ahlstrom

Steve- Thanks for the info! Are you able to gather any info about page hits and the like without their software? I'd think that kind of thing would be quite useful in revising pages. >>that only runs under Windows (no Mac, no OS/2, no Amiga, no BeBox <grin>, etc.)<< Yah, they're really cutting out everything but Windows support. 🙁 Mr. Zombie

The software is only for producing your page (which it does poorly) and for getting it to them. That's it. If you want to do a real commerical Home Page with professional design, no size limitation, CGI support, and all the "goodies", you can find that sort of thing for between $1k-$10k setup charge and $50-$250 per month maintenance.

<< For home pages and the like, we Amigans are SOL, unless we have PCs. >> Yeah, I wanted to ask the same thing – will there be a program that will allow us Amiga user to create home pages as well? I've heard of such a program, but know neither its name now whether it will be compatible with CIS. Alex Alexander Schwassmann // EMail: aschwassmann@art-line.art-line.de my personal opinions … \X/ … will probably by different from yours

There are some pd macros for Final Writer that generate HTML commands, but as far as the type of page management software that CIS is making for (I assume) Windows only, we're SOL, probably the same as Mac users. Mr. Zombie

Mr Z, I don't really see that any special software should be necessary, as long as CIS lets us upload HTML pages. Steve Brightman Daring to be different – Amiga on the Internet – Lotus on the Interstate

>>I don't really see that any special software should be necessary, as long >>as CIS lets us upload HTML pages. In fact thinking about it, they already doo.. we all have a "Personal file" area don't we, but how many of us use it? I bet all they're doing is allowing the Per area to be accessed by the Web.. (simplified answer I know..) Steve

Steve- >>I don't really see that any special software should be necessary, as long as CIS lets us upload HTML pages.<< Possibly… but still, as far as control over the page, monitoring, etc, goes, I really doubt it'll be easy. Mr. Zombie
