To Amiga Users board. My mis-adventures with downloading. To start with, I was
using 7-N-1 as my set up as this is what was advised to me locally when I first
joined Compuserve. Many failed attempts later, and after some message/reply
sessions with Sysop Betty Clay 76702,337 in Communications I am now on 8-n-1.
However downloading still fails. The last attempt did get further than before
but the system aborted itself after 45mins with the message Too Many
Retransmissions. I am using an Amiga500 with spare 2.5meg free memory. WB
settings for serial are 8-n-1 at 19200baud. Comm.pr. is NComm3.0 settings also
8-n-1 on Xmodem protocol. I acess Compuserve at 2400baud as the com.pr. has no
facility for the higher line of 14400baud. This com.pr.also has no facility to
strip-high-bit which was recommended by Sysop B.C. The choice of protocol
Zmodem is not in the library setup.??? All this in an effort to download the
Autopilot file from the AmigaVendor libraries. Can anybody in Amigaland advise
me on what I am missing?
Are you trying to download using the download requester on the pulldown menu of
NComm? If so this doesn't work. Sellect YModem and just follow the compuserve
commands. I used termite before autopilot, and when I got to the download stage
I used the pull down menu and a message came up "Download cancelled or timed
out". I then, ignored this requestor and followed the Compuserve commands. The
other problem which confused me was: "Sellect a filename for your computer". I
put a directory path in here. This is also wrong. All it is asking for is what
you want the file to be called. (ie AP.LHA name this as AP). If this doesn't
work,let me know and I'll go through it on NComm again. Rest assured, once
youve got AutoPilot you will be delighted as it speeds up downloads and you can
read and write messages off line

Actually, when CIS asks "File name for your computer:", you should put both the
directory and the filename under which you want your file stored, such as:
RAM:AP.LHA

Betty, don't all Amiga term programs, Term, NComm, or my favorite, Terminus,
already have download directories configured in the program? All that should
be needed is the name of the file, eg: AP.LHA. That's what I did on CIS when I
downloaded AP and it's docs the first time I got on, just type in the file
name. It seemed to work fine for Terminus.

This may be true for some of the term programs – but not for all. If you
aren't sure, then putting in the directory makes certain that the file goes
where you want it, and not to whatever happens to be your current directory at
the time you are downloading.

Ok, Betty… I'm only familiar with Terminus, and a little with Term 4.X. I
think both of them you can configure where you want downloads to go. Guess
that's not enough knowledge to base a general statement on… 🙂

Surely NComm has something besides XModem that will match something on
CompuServe. Can you use B protocols? or Kermit? or YModem?
Is your flow control set to RTS/CTS?

Some folks have reported problems trying to download with Xmodem. You might
have better luck with Y modem or CISB or B+. I don't know whether NComm
supports any of those though.
You might want to try a different comm program if you can't get NComm to do
what you need. I know you're trying to get AutoPilot, and this must be
frustrating for you.

I highly reccomend JRCOMM for your system. It has a builtin CISB+ protocol
which is what you need for the High Xfer speeds. Its an excellent program that
uses your system rescources very sparingly and it is FREEWARE. Just about any
BBS worth its salt will have it avail in their file section for download.
I'm on a souped up Ami 2000 and I -STILL- choose to use JRCOMM it served me
well on a bare bones 1.3 Amiga 500 and it still does faster xfers than any of
the 'newer' terms that most others use. Especially on Compuserve I pull
1640cps xfers with my 14.4 all the time.
Other than the CISB+ protocol you'll also want to run with a 4 color
WorkBench and no more than an 8 color TERM screen esp if you're running with a
68000 cpu.
One last thing you should check is that you are using RTS/CTS flow control
and NOT XON/XOFF.
