>If you have an internal drive (in the Amiga) that is the head end (and should be terminated), not the controller. In this config you MUST remove the termination on the controller card. The "tail" end is the external (or LAST external) drive which must also be terminated (or use a terminating plug on the expansion box).< Hi Steve. Both ends of the system need to be terminated. If you have only internal drives, the controller must be terminated, as well as the last physical device. Thats what my tech support manual says, anyway. I don't remember being able to remove the 040 card termination, but I'll look into it. Since my system was terminated externally (passive) and internally (passive), as well as on the controller, that could be a problem, although I have run several systems like this with no failures _ever_. On the matter of mixing termination, I didn't stop to think that the external CDRom is passive termination. That was a good point, but it didn't make a difference in my setup. Still, this is a very valuable point. Thanks !! So, back to my search for the scsi ghost…… Mike Brennan, Sir Render A/V

< Both ends of the system need to be terminated > Agreed. Perhaps I didn't state it too well but my post referred to the situation with BOTH internal and external drives connected (in which case the controller should be unterminated). < I don't remember being able to remove the 040 card termination > Possibly true, I think only the later '040 cards had sockets, once GVP realized they'd screwe up <g> < although I have run several systems like this with no failures _ever_. > You're just plain lucky then <vbg> In my experience the two most common problems are incorrect termination (not helped in GVP's case by a lousy manual) and using unscreened cables to connect external drives. Hi Steve. >Possibly true, I think only the later '040 cards had sockets, once GVP realized they'd screwe up <g> Well, I guess I'l just get out the old soldering iron, then. l8-0 Just for the record, I had the same set of failures when I ran just the internal drive (passive term) and the controller( terminated.) I think I'll go out on halloween dressed as a scsi ghost ! Mike Brennan, Sir Render A/V

< Well, I guess I'l just get out the old soldering iron, then. l8-0 > Good luck, be careful, those PCB traces lift very easily. < Just for the record, I had the same set of failures when I ran just the internal drive (passive term) and the controller( terminated.) > To be honest I've fogotten what those symptoms were now – sorry 🙁 If it was the "unexpected device status thing, it could only be the drive spinning up too slowly. < I think I'll go out on halloween dressed as a scsi ghost ! > Keep the faith ! As I mentioned my new 1G went in without a hitch. I'm about to do the same thing at work on a PC without the benefit of HDToolbox ExpertPrep or anything. I expect much more hassle – after all its a "plug and play" PC <g> Steve Brightman Daring to be different – Amiga on the Internet – Lotus on the Interstate

Hi Steve. >If it was the "unexpected device status thing, it could only be the drive spinning up too slowly.< That was one of the problems, how do you remedy that? The other problem was random read/write errors. >Keep the faith ! As I mentioned my new 1G went in without a hitch.< I've done this dozens of times without a hitch untill now. That's what stumps me, I've tried everything. But I won't give up, of course. > I'm about to do the same thing at work on a PC without the benefit of HDToolbox ExpertPrep or anything. I expect much more hassle – after all its a "plug and play" PC <g> < Don't tell me you've ever had a hardware conflict with a PC !!! 😉 In school they used to tell me "watch your P's and Q's" Now you have to watch your 'IRQ's" 🙂 Mike Brennan, Sir Render A/V
