#ShapeShifter ???

I can't get ShapeShifter to recognize my CD-ROM drive. It's an Apple CD-300
external drive, set as unit 4.
I first tried it connected to my Emplant, since I didn't want to bother moving
the drive yet, but then I tried it on my A3000's external SCSI connector.
Neither worked.
I checked first unit 0, and then unit 1, in SS's SCSI config window, left the
device name as scsi.device, and typed 4 in the unit window. But when I launch
the emulation and insert my System 7.5 disc once the emulation is running,
nothing happens.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I kind of need to get this running
soon, since I'm going to have to yank my Emplant for awhile to make room for my

Also, what do I need to access 800k Mac floppies? The SS docs say something
about CrossMac and a Mac floppy drive, but what would I hook the floppy drive
up to? Also, would CrossMac allow me to transfer files back and forth between
my Emplant and ShapeShifter partitions?

The obvious question first: do you have the CDROM extensions in the extension
directory inside the system directory?

I haven't been able to install System 7.5 yet, since it's on a disc. 🙁 I'm
just booting off the Disk Tools disk at this point. I should try that with my
Emplant while it's still in my machine to check, but I think that since it's an
Apple drive I don't need any special extensions… no?
The ShapeShifter docs are unclear on this, too.

I'm no MAC expert, but I think you need at least the MAC CDROM extension in the
Extensions folder. There are others: foreign file system, Iso 9600, etc.

I also have similar problems getting ShapeShifter recognising my Toshiba CDROM.
I can get SS to play audio CD's quite happily but not recognise data disks no
matter what I try. I am interested in the replies you get to this problem.

Unfortunately, I don't know how much I can help you, as you have a Toshiba and
I have an Apple (Sony) drive, which is supported by the basic System 7.5
software.
I expect you need a driver… except that you can access audio discs. How have
you configured SS? Do you have the CD-ROM as a device disk? I doubt that,
since that's supposed to give you data-only (audio?) access.
What controller, ID number, etc, are you using, and is the SCSI chain
terminated properly?
I doubt this will help, but I was finally able to get SS to recognize my CD-ROM
drive by dragging the System folder from my Disk Tools disk onto my SS
partition and then Restarting. For whatever reason, voila! I could install
System 7.5 from disc and then install the 7.5.1 update. But, since you don't
have an Apple drive, and apparently have the OS installed already, this won't
be of help I expect. <G>

I finally solved the problem. It was finger trouble setting up the EMPCD:
device driver and once solved everything works fine. Basically when entering
EMPCD: into the ASL requester to create a second device I got an error message
saying no disk present in drive EMPCD: regardless of whether a CD was in or
not. I cancelled this requester and the ASL requester. What I should have done
was cancel the error requester and click on OK in the ASL. Confusing or what?
