Hi, I'm looking for users, lovers and haters of Real3D. Who uses it? What's good/bad about it. How do you get it to do its magic? Does anyone have any input? (Does anyone know any users of the PC version?) Thanks, .matk (oops – I mean 'mark')

(followed the link here) I am looking for some support on this as well, any info appreciated!

Hi Mark, I use Real 3D daily and I am quite pleased with it. The interface is quirky at first, but that's because it is so flexible and customizable. I believe the programs's strongest point is its rendering output – absolutely gorgeous. The weakest point is its abilitly to use direct numerical input when modelling, but I understand that is being improved. It has a fairly steep learning curve, and the manual could use some improvement. I use the Amiga version and I understand the PC is similar and more expensive. My biggest complaint is there are too few places to visit to discuss the aspects of the software. It is almost never mentioned in these fora. Glad to answer any other questions you may have. Bye.

I'll second that… it seems to be the hidden gem of the 3d world. The problem is that for just that reason we may need to ignore it 🙁 While it is powerful, the numper of IPAS routines growing daily make 3ds look better and better. The only thing really holding it back is the inability to convert dxf files to splines. WHile it would not be perfect I am sure… the inability to do so makes it almost ineffective for us.

Chris, Doesn't the program RealConvert convert dxf files to a real objects. Then they can be converted to spline mesh types and if neccesary use triple end points/lines. Just a thought.

If you mean Import/Export helper (the tool they shipped me) then I can make real 3d objects no problem, but the are trimeshes and cannot be converted to splines that I see.

Are you saying that Real3D spline objects cannot be exported to DXF/3DS? I can do it on the PC version and it seems to work fairly well. ..mark

I can export TO 3ds fine, unfortunatly, 3ds objects are non spline-able.

Nope… the wont go to splines 🙁 Once it is triangles you are dead.

Hi, thanks for the input – i haven't seen the amiga version, but I think it is s'posed to be similar. here's a quick question. I'm trying to do an animation involving a series of collisions. to get the collisions to work more or less properly, I've had to turn the frame rate WAY up. I notice on the demo tape that many of the animations seem to run in slo-mo, presumably because they also had to turn it up to 100fps or so. my question is, is there an EASY way to make an animation at 24fps or so from this project? I know i can render all the frames and then somehow get rid of 3/4 of them, but this seems like a huge waste of time, disk space, etc. any suggestions? thanx. ps – i see this thread has gone on the mention 3ds which does a lot of this with IPAS's, but what's the price of 3DS plus every IPAS you'd need to do what Real 3D does? Any idea? ..mark

RE: 3ds for nt/spline .. >Yeah, but that's what they told us last time, isn't it? <G>< Heh. Look ate the specs for 3ds MAX… I for one am returning my real 3d anyway…. (sigh) .. I wanted to love it, but cant…. the advantages are great, the industry support for it is slime and I do not have the time to pray for a rpl script to balance out the 8 million good ipas routines.

>I wanted to love it, but cant As a note of caution .. even though it is dongle protected, I am getting nailed for a 10% (approx 75$) 'restocking fee'. Not very professional IMHO, and makes me kinda glad I am getting out from under it.

Don't blame the creators for that. All the sleaze-ball marketting stuff comes from the *&^% at Godfrey and Associates in Canada. Those ()_*&*( sold pre-beta release stuff at NAB in 1994 at their booth while the developers were showing the release version… never mind – I could go on, but you've apparently got the picture without the benefit of my experience already. :^} wmc – via Autopilot!

*** It looks like we will be dumping real 3d as soon as 3ds is out for nt and does some splineing (next version) — it looks like r3d will never get the support for rpl the ipas has and the industry is moving way too fast. *** Reading the above it sounds unfair. Let me say that for US, where the money is not the issue, a system like MAX is a good choice…. the industry support will be invaluable. This is not really a flaw in R3d, if you can take the time to learn it, and RPL, then I am sure it will be great for you.
