Does anyone know of a Microstation *.dgn to *.3ds translator? I been aching to find one for a long time.

i'll second that i'm working with some engineers and need to convert Microstation to 3ds – without too much hassle. I know you can do it through DXF but it's a hassle and doesn't work well Terrence LaPlante

Terrence: I don't use Microstation but I have encountered several folks who share your view that Microstation to 3DS file importing via .dxf is a hassle (several here in AMMEDIA and a couple in CADDVEN). Could you explain why .dxf is problematic? I'd like to formulate a decent suggestion for Autodesk to consider. Which choices do you use – By Layer? By Entity? Do you experience flipped face normals? – Bob Ritger

I cant say exactly because i was peripherally involved in the actual computer work but i do know that we had a lot of 'ratsnests' errors the first time we tried it. What wound up happening was that we had an artist take the Microstation model into Autocad and then resave it out as DXF after going through each layer. I am going to be working with a Microstation user directly soon and should be able to give better reports since i will be testing it carefully one step at a time. I am very interested in helping you with this so please stay in touch. I work for the electric utility in the Chicago area and we have a lot of engineers using Microstation with a need to make models move and put them onto videotape and that's where I (and 3DStudio) come in. thanks Terry Laplante

Terry: The "invalid ratnest" errors on .dxf import were explained here a long while back. Maybe Jonas can dig up something as I have just vague recollections. I know that I had some problems with these same errors myself a while back. The best results I got were without automatic vertex welding and importing objects by layer. Now I go a different route and use Syndesis Corp's Interchange. If you've got a file which is trouble you could upload it here (ASHOWCASE would be better due to space limitations) or e-mail it to me. – Bob Ritger

I have a copy of several threads dealing with invalid rats nest. Most of them seem to deal with Ustation <g>. I'll prune those threads out and upload them as a file tonite or tomorrow. LAM

Larry: Thanks for uploading the files, it should be very useful. – Bob Ritger

I just uploaded 2 thread collections – one on booleans and the other on invalid rats-nest. Should show up tomorrow. UStation seemed to be a common problem source for invalid rats-nests. LAM

i wish i had more specifics right now but unfortunately i didn't actually make the translation- someone was working with me and they had the problems – but from what i understand – the models had to be loaded into AutoCad, reworked (how i'm not sure) and then exported again as DXF. Otherwise it was basically

Terrence: Your message was cut off. Anyway, Larry Minton has uploaded some threads and messages on invalid Rats nests and other anomolies. I haven't checked them out yet but they will be worth a look. – Bob Ritger

I uploaded a bunch of threads on invalid rats-nests as RATSNEST.ZIP. UStation seemed to be a common cause <g>. You should look at that file and see what the collective wisdom is. LAM
