Hi-res background prob
11 messages in this thread
Thanks for the reply Dave. Here goes . . .Yes, we are supplying a printer with
hi-rez image. We need to output the GIF we have. What is the best way to
re-render it?. It doesn't exist as an object file. Can we map it to a flat
object in 3dstudio?
Thanks
Loren
I just jumped in on the thread, so I'm not sure what exactly you are talking
about. But, I also had a problem with the background image file in rendering.
The problem was this. 3D Studio wants the background image to be the same size
as the file you are rendering to. If not, it chops the image or shows a blank
space.
To remedy this use Video post. Instead of designating a background in the 3D
Editor, put your background on the first line of Video Post and put the 3D
scene on the second line. Then 3D Studio will resize the background to the size
of the output image (assuming you set the VP properties of the background image
correctly).
If this wasn't your problem, sorry.
One of the more interesting solutions. We are set to try it soon.
Thanks Brett. Loren
Well Loren, I'd say you're out of luck. No, you can't map the image and have
3DS resize it. I mean it would work but it will still look bad. It would be the
same as resizing it in Photoshop or anything else. 3DS will typically make a
resize look nicer than photoshop but not enough to compensate for what you're
doing.
Although I don't know much about it, and have never tried it, there is software
available that's supposed to accomplish very nice resizing using fractal
techniques. You may want to contact Iterated Systems about it. Or maybe someone
else will have more info.
When you're doing stuff for print keep the following in mind: You always want
to produce work at the intended output resolution. LPI is normally 1/2 of the
required DPI. So, if you want to print an image using a 133 line screen at 4×5
inches – you would need to supply an image that was 1064×1330 pixels. Your
printer should be able to tell you the exact formula. Otherwise you could have
someone recreate the image, depending on what it was, at the required
resolution.
Hope this helps.

I tried it for just the purpose of resizing images several times larger and
sent it back when the results wernt much better than Photoshop. In fact the
resulting artifacts are pretty obvious. This software ( I cant recall the namre
) is good for compressing images though.

Thanks for the feedback Ed.

Dave & Loren:
Depending on the image, and how much you're blowing it up, yes — Iterated
Systems' "Images Incorporated" does a GREAT job. For example, I took the small
"forest w/ stump" portion of the first uploaded sample of WorldBuilder (about
1/4 of a 640×480 image) and used Images Inc to blow it up to 800×600 for use as
my Win3.1x/NT wallpaper (much better in NT w/ support for 24-bit wallpaper!).
I did run a sharpen filter on it afterwards, but as I say, depends on the image
and the enlargement % (it can also reduce the res of an image if you need).
The latest version is Images Incorporated 4.0 (what a dumb name!), and can be
had for around $100 mail order. Check out MicroWarehouse (they're available
online on CIS) — I think they carry it.

Thanks for the info Dave. Hopefully Loren will be able to use that as an
alternative to starting over from scratch.

Thanks a bunch for the lead.
Loren
Thanks Dave. I thought this would be to easy.
