This message is from the Adesk Acad Forum…the Sysop suggested I also display it here in the hopes that someone might be having the same problems. >>I am running R13 C3 on NT. P/5-60 w/32 Megs of RAM and 2-550Meg HDs. I am trying to export a file to 3DS4. My Viewres is set to 20,000 and Facetres to 10 (I want the smoothest object possible in 3DS). If I do a 3DSOUT my computer hangs up and if I do a DXFOUT the resulting file is not recognized as a 3D object by 3DStudio.<< >>No one has yet been able to help me with this problem and it is becoming serious as I am limited in trying to complete a project I have been working on for several weeks in 3DS4.<< >>I have tried everything I know how to do, have searched the manuals and message base on this Forum and have hit a wall….I didn't have any such problem before I installed the C3 patch, but I don't know if that has anyting to do with this problem.<< >>I am very accustomed to working in solids having spent long hours waiting for the old AutoSolids program and living through the AME releases. Many of the DXF files I imported to 3DS in the past have been 30-50 Megs in size and this one is less than 400 K.<< >>It is VERY important that I figure out the answer to this problem…can you get this into the hands of the proper people? Can I upload this file to someone to look at it? It's in your hands…please help.<< If anyone here on this Forum has any ideas I would more than happy to recieve them. Paul

Paul, your viewres setting seems very high.Try Facetres 6, Viewres 500, and Isolines 100. This gives pretty smooth results. Works on my machine. John

John, >>Paul, your viewres setting seems very high.Try Facetres 6, Viewres 500, and Isolines 100. This gives pretty smooth results. Works on my machine.<< Thanks for your response. I reset my drawing per above, did a Regen, invoked 3DSOUT….after several minutes I got the notice that it was successful. When I brought the file into 3DS4 I had a blank screen. Checking the file size my .DWG file is 745K and the .3DS file is 569bytes….I'm afraid that is not the solution but I really appreciate your trying to help. Paul

Paul, I don't think the difference in file size is a problem, the 3DS files are always much smaller after conversion so the problem doesn't seem to be the filles. Try naming your objects to specific layers in Autocad. John

John, >>Paul, I don't think the difference in file size is a problem, the 3DS files are always much smaller after conversion so the problem doesn't seem to be the filles. Try naming your objects to specific layers in Autocad.<< I'm sorry to dissagree with you since you are voluteering your comments, but the size of the file is very significant in this case. To think that a .DWG file of 745,000bytes can be reduced to 569bytes and not signify that something is not right just dosen't wash. In any event I only have one object, comprised of 5 primitves having been booleaned through unions and subtractions, all on one named layer. The only other layer in the file is 0. I am convinced that this is a bug in the new C3b patch in R13…I only hope someone on that Forum (Acad) will respond. I have had problems in the past on that Forum with Adesk people not answering difficult questions and then learning that they knew of the problem but just elected to ignore it until they had a solution. I wish they reacted like the people here…this Forum is unbelievably responsive and knowledgeable Thanks for your comments. Paul

<< I am convinced that this is a bug in the new C3b patch in R13. >> I think that was the patch that was recalled. There was a problem with some of the patches that went out not to long ago. Hope this helps Steve

Steve My understanding is that it was the C3a patch that was recalled. The Adesk Forum is now showing up with others who are having the same problems I am and yet not one Adesk person has answered my pleas for help on the other Forum….I wish they would take a few lessons from the people who run and support this forum! It is odd that two programs from the same company and not many people know much about exchanging data between them. When you ask questions you get referred to the other forum, which usually doesn't help.

Paul: It was the r13c3b patch (not the "a") that was recalled. They've set up a special download area for a that is a "no charge" area. I believe it's GO word is listed in the ACAD forum announcement. Dave

I have been following the mail you have been forwarding on the discussions Paul and John have been having on the problems with doing the 3DS exports from R13 C3 to 3D studio. I have had a problem since the C3 patch came out, I am not sure if it is the same problem or the same type of problem but I thought I would share it with them. I had done a change to an existing model done before the patch and already 3DSed out successfully at that time. I went to 3dsout the same solids I had done before and found that either my machine would crash or there would be nothing in the 3DS file when it was done. I ran an audit on the drawing because I thought it may have been corrupted, but there was no errors. Next I did a check by creating a simple solid and attempting that, again the same thing happened. I then Wblocked out the solids and went into the Wblock and tried again, the same thing happened. Next I did a Wblock of the solids, opened a new drawing with no prototype and inserted the block in. I purged the drawing and tried again and this time it worked. The odd thing is that this doesn't seem to happen on all of the models I do, but it does on the complex ones, (the ones I have had the problems with have been over 2000 faces), most of the simple ones are fine. Like I said, I am not sure this is the same problem but I thought it might help or at least be of interest to you. Perry Moscrip
