I'm having strange problem that documentation nor dealer can answer, so maybe someone out there has a clue. During the modelling and animation of an architectural project I discovered a when opening the tracks dialog a significant slow down in it's speed. The cause became evident when I used display unhide and discovered the existence of several thousand instances of Dummy and Dummy2. You read right, several thousand. It takes a minute to scroll through the list of objects. I have only simple camera movement, no links and no instanced objects. What's really distressing is that whenever I merge any object from this file into another, it creates all these dummy objects in the new file thus perpetuating the problem to other projects. As usual the dealer doesn't have a clue and Autodesk won't asnwer any questions.

Sounds like your file got corrupted in some way. Can you delete the dummy objects? Try merging the file into a file that already has a Dummy and Dummy2 in it. -Grant Blaha [ADESK]

Yes, I can delete each dummy object, one at a time. However, since there are thousands, well you get the idea. I'll try your merge idea. Thanks

Michael: How about: In the KF, select Hierarchy/Link and then hit "H". In the dialog, use the template box w/ something like "Dumm*" and pick "Tag" to select all the dummies — then de-select one (or don't if they all have the same name — instead, first create an object or uniquely named dummy to use as the "parent"). Link all selected to the non-selected object. Use Object/Delete and pick the "parent", and say "yes" to delete subtree. Will _that_ work? Dave

I'll try it. Sounds good to me. Thanks, your the first one with a clever way out of this mess I've gotten myself in to.

Hi Michael, << it creates all these dummy objects in the new file thus perpetuating the problem to other projects. As usual the dealer doesn't have a clue and Autodesk won't asnwer any questions. >> Does your 3ds.prj file contain all these dummies? If you merge the project file in slowly (ie. one object at a time), and review your keyframer scene, can you find the object that may be corrupt? Are other project files corrupt or just this one? jonas[adesk]

Yes, the .prj file contains all the dummys. Merging is an idea I'll try. Other .prj files into which I have merged objects from the bad file now contain the dummys. I subsequently deleted the merged objects from the bad file but it still contains the dummys, which are not linked to any other objects.

We've been dealing with this problem for a long time and we've determined that when you merge a project or .3ds file or a piece of one with the animation button on, ALL of the dummies from the source file are also merged into the destination file, even if there is already a dummy (or dummies) of the same name. So if you're doing a lot of merging, it's easy to accumulate a huge list of identical dummies. I thought this was an undocumented feature….
