Speaking from vast personal experience, almost any recent, large (>1GB) SCSI disk will work on the outside (fast) part of the drive. It is when the drive begins to get full and the slower inner portion is used that problems will occur. Also, when editing (performing many seeks) the sustained drive throughput goes down, requiring higher than normal transfer rates from the disks. While I know the pepole at NewTek want you to be able to get drives cheaply from nearly any source, they are also trying to push the minimum allowable sustained rate from the disk as high as possible (this rate will only go up in the future, and more data = better video). Also at this point in time, there are several subtle paramaters such as cache control and thermal recalibration timing that very among the same manufacturer due to different versions of firmware. My recomendation would be to use the recommended drives at first, unless there is a VERY good reason not to. Charles Steinkuehler

I consider saving well over $1000 a very good reason. These drives can be had with a 30 day return if they don't perform wwelll with the Flyer. Where's the down side? Regards, Gary

PMFJI – The down side is more timing I believe. When the production is ready to tape (ten minutes before the presentation?) and the drive won't give you acceptable output, IT WON'T GIVE YOU ACCEPTABLE OUTPUT. At that point a replacement drive would have to be installed and all the files transfered to that new drive and the script modified to find the moved clips. I do believe that the this is possible, but it might be a the cost of the customer who is looking over your shoulder. Can you make up the loss? or would you rather take out insurance and not have to? $1000 is alot, but it must be a business decision, and one lost customer (and reputation) might cost ten times that. Just my input (even though you didn't ask for it). Let us know how it works out. Hank Videology, Inc Where you get all the P.O.M.P. under all circumstances.

Henry, I don't plan on doing any presentations straight off the Flyer…but I DO appreciate deadlines to get editing projects done. GK

Hi Gary – Some of my clients offer handson editing time and will, undoubtedly, be using the Flyer with the customer there. I've had some real panic calls when the client is in the office editing and the Toaster isn't working they way they think it should. Sometimes a quick visit is necessary, since the customer is paying by the hour. That's why we offer on-site maintenance. Hank Videology, Inc Where you get all the P.O.M.P. under all circumstances.
