#Breaking glass w/Explode

I'm trying to do something I thought would be relatively simple using Yost #4's "Explode" AXP IPAS routine: shatter a portion of a piece of glass as if it were hit by a rock, and retain realistic gravity and obtain pieces that are of various sizes to simulate how a piece of sheet/annealed/non-tempered glass would fragment. First of all, I have a 5' 4" wide 4' 10" tall sheet of tinted glass 7/32" sheet (non-tempered) glass. I want to blow out the bottom 2/3rds of it. I assume that I will need to substitute a hidden two-object glass for the original sheet at the point of explosion (is there anything in 3DS4c1 that would 'cut' glass irregularly for me?). I'm no dummy, and have been using Yost #6 IPAS routines (among others) for some time, and followed the (somewhat outdated?) instructs on how to simulate a blast-center that roughly corresponds to the point of impact, and after looking at the example files, thought I had what I needed, but rendering (preview doesn't show APX effects) shows as if I've done nada. I rechecked the 'Explode' setup / options and don't see where I'm going wrong. Any ideas? I'm using the 'bounded-box' or 'boxed-object' method…

One of our programmers who did his PhD dissertation on blowing things up has some cool code for this effect. I know of no commercial software that does this. My suggestion would be to have a 2 sheets of glass. One whole and one made of broken pieces that you had created manually in the shaper/lofter. Maybe photograph a smashed sheet of glass as a guide for fracture lines in the shaper. When the whole glass is hit, substitute the fractured sheet and use dynamics (key factory) or manually keyframe the pieces flying/falling. Sounds like a fun project – good luck.

Mike, try it without the IPAS- in the shaper, draw the glass with all the cracks where you want them. Extrude the plane as individual pieces with adjacent borders on all the cracks. Select the surface faces and map them with the desired material. Could probably use automatic reflection mapping as planes are flat. The cracks should not show when the glass is rendered. Then break it up as desired. It's more work than the IPAS but should give you good control. Alternatively, try combining the above method with the IPAS, using explode on certain "cracked" pieces only. If your'e moving the pane before it breaks, just link all the pieces to a single dummy.
