I would like to add a removable hard disk and/or a tape system to my A3000. I have seen some pretty goods deals on some lately. Will any scsi device work? I have the standard scsi controller that came with the computer. I appreciate any guidance. Thanks, Jack

Jack, We're using an external Syquest 105Mb (removeable HD), an external Conner Python 2Gb DAT drive and two internal Micropolis 4110 1Gb hard drives all plugged into a standard A3000 (WB2.05). It's also running Enlan DFS 2.0 and acts as one of our file servers, so it gets a lot of grief – no problems with it at all. Hope that helps, Stuart Blackwell Studio Digital Media

Stuart, >> It's also running Enlan DFS 2.0 and acts as one of our file servers do you know of any Network software for a PC Clone that will communicate with ENLAN (I think it's DEC net compatable) ? – wkc – … via AP from Hamburg, Germany

Jack: While I don't (yet) have a removable hard disk or tape drive, I did add an external hard drive to my A3000. Yes, any SCSI device will work, but I should add that with any SCSI system, use a premium quality cable and be sure the termination is correctly set up. You can find the SCSI cable you need at an Apple/Mac dealer, if there is no Amiga dealer near you. If you use a removable media drive, keep in mind that you'll need a utility called "SCSIMounter" to allow the A3000 to know when you remove and insert cartridges while the computer is running. Hope this helps! — Dave

You may want to check out the SCSI chip on the motherboard though. If it's the proto chip, you might want to consider upgrading it to the standard SCSI chip. Jim

How do I tell what kind of chip it is? -Jack

> How do I tell what kind of chip it is? < Jack, you'll have to take your 3000 apart, down to where you can see the motherboard. If you've never done it before, it's an experience. 🙂 Anyway, find the SCSI chip, if it's the proto chip, it should be printed on top. As far as I know most/all 3000's had that chip, but don't hold me to that. You should be able to get the regular SCSI chip via mail order, or maybe even locally. It's a simple pull out the old chip, and plug in the new one operation. Easy, if you have a chip puller. As for the SCSI chip's location, I'm not certain where it is, but I think it should be near where the SCSI cable plugs into the motherboard, under where the HD is mounted. Jim
