Hello Doug
As an enthusistic amateur I was very pleased to find a geology
section in this forum. I live in an area of the North West of England that was
intensively deep mined for coal and is currently being opencast mined. I am
particularly interested in vulcanology and tectonics.

Hi, Graham–
Welcome to the forum/section!
There are people here who are keen to know about any and all volcano news; I
have recently been learning about a volcano mail-list (download INTERN.TXT in
this forum's library for details on how to use) and regular postings of volcano
news in the newsgroup sci.geo.geology (download SCIGEO.TXT for more).
What do you have by way of volcanoes in the UK? Is this a hobby that requires
you to travel a lot to see any? I am sure there are old ones, but I do not
recall hearing of any active ones over there.
Do you collect any minerals? As an amateur collector of fluorescent minerals,
I am fond of the brilliantly-fluorescent fluorites from the area of Weardale
and Alston Moor – not only are they stunning specimens, but they are what led
to the discovery of ultraviolet and fluorescence.

Thanks for the reply,Doug !
Fortunately volcanic activity in the UK is very much a thing of the past,
the last being in the Tertiary (I think).
I did travel recently to the island of Lanzarote for a holiday, or so my
wife thought !!!!!!!! If you are interested in volcanoes it is certainly worth
a visit, especially the Timanfaya National Park.
I don't know if you have heard about it before but there is a small
geological museum in Creetown, SW Scotland, that has a particularly fine
exhibit of fluorescent minerals.

Hi, Graham–
By a curious coincidence, I had heard of the Creetown museum from a distant
relative in Manchester. I have it noted in case I ever make it back to my
ancestral homeland (well, one of my ancestral homelands…).

Hi Graham,
Just another welcome, from another (relatively) new member. I visited the UK
last year for two weeks–didn't see any volcanoes 😉 but had a great time
fossil-hunting in Dorset. I was especially impressed with the ability to come
around a headland in the rain and find a nice, cozy pub! Now THAT'S civilized
rock hounding!
