I heard that this emulator runs only text games and other primitive games but does not handle graphics or color,so says my local dealer.

It doen't handle them fast enough to be worthwhile, but it does handle them. I think your dealer is wrong, but don't blame him for not wanting to carry it. It would do nothing but disappoint anyone who purchased it. Lloyd

I want to purchase a Commodore computer.I have just moved in from India.I hhad a c-64 there and I still have a lot of software for it.I am interested in the Amiga 500 but am also interested in utilizing my software for the C64.I cant afford both computers so what do you think I should do.Rumour has it that the 500 shall become cheaper soon and also that a complete hardware based emulator should also be out by Feb.88.

Himanshu, I too thought at one time that I would want to run all my C64 software, and anxiously awaited the appearance of an emulator. I was in no rush, because I still had my C64 sitting next to the Amiga (actually it was a 128, but most of the software was for the 64 side). Anyway, I found myself ignoring the 128 more and more. It sat there gathering dust. Why? Because there was more than enough software for the Amiga coming out for me to play with and learn from. I had less and less interest in the 128, until I finally bought an A2000. The A2000 and A1000 now sit side by side on the desk, and the 128 has been relegated to the box full of things that I should get around toi selling one day. After transferring all the data files I needed to keep, there really wasn't any more use in keeping it on the desk. Yes, the Amiga is _that_ good. Regards, Larry.

DEAR LARRY, THANKS FOR YOUR ADVICE.I DONT THINK I SHALL BE BUYING AN AMIGA YET.I WOULD RATHER WAIT TILL THE PRICES DROP A BIT.IN THE MEANTIME I'LL GO IN FOR A C64 (SECOND HAND) AND FREAK OUT ON THAT.BY THE WAY WHAT ARE THE PRICES FOR AMIGA SOFTWARE AS COMPARED TO C64.I THINK THAT THEY ARE SOMEWHAT THE SAME,IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN.MAYBE I'LL SAVE UP FOR AN AMIGA 2000 RATHER THAN A 500.ANYWAY THANKS. Himanshu, Software for the Amiga tends to be comparable in price at the lower end, but the higher priced stuff is more on the Amiga. Of course much of the higher priced stuff isn't even available on the 64. I guess you could say it ranges from "about the same" to "a lot more" for the Amiga. Regards, Larry.

dear larry, Thanks for your prompt reply.I am really more interested in games and from all the ads I've read I am inclined to think that the software is really priced the same.As regards to productivity software I think that it is really expensive (like Dynamic CAD,Amiga superbase etc.).I think that such high prices lead to piracy.what are your views. Himanshu

Himanshu, It's been my experience that while high prices may contribute to piracy, it isn't the predominant reason for it. I have seen many inexpensive and good programs stolen simply because it added to the "collection" of the thief. I really do think that education is the only answer. A person who sees the author of the program as a living, breathing human being who is trying to make a living is less likely to steal his efforts. When enough people feel that way, it will stop being a "glamourous" pursuit, and the scorn of ones peers will hasten the process. Regards, Larry.

DEAR LARRY, YES YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT COLLECTORS BUT I DO FEEL THAT THE HIGH PRICES OF TODAYS SOFTWARE IS THE MAIN CAUSE OF PIRACY.OF COURSE THESE COLLECTORS ALSO DO CAUSE A LOT OF PROBLEMS BY EXCHANGING SOFTWARE TO INCREASE THEIR COLLECTION ALL THE MORE.YES,IF THESE PE OPLE WERE TO LOOK AT THE AUTHORS' WORK AS THEIR LIVELIHOOD MAYBE THESE PIRATES MAY HAVE SOME SENSE.MY PROBLEM IS THAT I HAVE INVESTED A LOT OF MONEY INTO BUYING COMMODORE 64 SOFTWARE AND I REALLY CANNOT ACCEPT THE FACT THAT I WILL HAVE TO ACTUALLTHROW AWAY MY SOFT WARE AS IT WILL NOT RUN ON THE AMIGA.THAT IS WHY I AM HESITANT IN BUYING MYSELF AN AMIGA AS I REALLY AM NOT IN A MOOD TO START FROM SCRATCH. Himanshu, As a general rule, when you move from one computer environment to another….you will find that your old software can't come with you. While you can create (and in this case…there is) an emulator to make your new computer act like your old computer….in most cases, the emulator has very limited usefulness. That must be taken into consideration when moving from one computer to another…..you'll more than likely need all new software. You must consider why you want to go from one system to another and then decide if that reason is good enough for you to go to the expense of getting all new software. There is one other consideration you can make…. You already have the C=64 and it's software. While your system has plenty of value for you….it may have very limited value if you tried to sell it to someone else. I would be surprised if you could sell a fully configured C=64 system for much more than $500, and probably alot less than that. In that case….it may well be worth your while to keep the C=64 and all it's software and purchase your new system as a 2nd system. Then, as you gradualy buy software for your new system that does the special things you bought the new system for, you will probably find you use the C=64 less and less. At some point, it's value to you will decrease to the point where selling it for $<whatever> will make sense to you and at that point…you'd sell it. With the money you'd make from the sale…you could go ahead and buy the 1 or 2 pieces of software for your new system that match what you currently have with the old system…and still would like to have that type of software. Make sense? Don

DEAR DON, YES, YOU ARE ABSLUTELY CORRECT. I APPRECIATE YOUR ADVICE.THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I HAD IN MIND.BUT YOU REALLY DONT KNOW MY BACKGROUND I HAVE JUST GOT IN FROM INDIA VERY RECENTLY.I HAD A C64 THERE WHICH I HAD TAKEN FROM HERE WHEN I WAS HERE LAST IN 1986.I MANAGED TO COLLECT QUITE A BIT OF SOFTWARE FOR IT IN THE PERIOD OF 1 YEAR.OF COURSE I DID MANAGE TO SELL MY SYSTEM AT A GOOD PROFIT EVEN THOUGH I HAD USED IT A LOT FOR OVER A YEAR.I STILL HAVE MY SOFTWARE WITH ME.I NOW PLAN TO BUY A COMPUTER. I ALREADY HAVE AN IBM PC-AT HERE AT HOME.BUT I REALLY AM INTERESTED IN GAMES AND I'M A SIMULATIONS FREAK.I AM REALLY VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE GRAPHICS OF THE AMIGA AND ALL THE MORE ZAPPED WITH THE SOUND.NOW I REALLY CANNOT AFFORD A C64 AND AN AMIGA.SO IT REALLY HAS TO BE ONE OF THEM.BUT I ALREADY HAVE SOFTWARE FOR THE C64 AND I CAN'T AFFORD AMIGA + SOFTWARE.SO I THINK I SHOULD REALLY GO IN FOR A C64 (JUST BASICALLY) THE COMPUTER AND THE DRIVE) AND SAVE FOR AN AMIGA 2000 .BY THE TIME I GET TO THAT STAGE I THINK THAT THE PRICES ON THE AMIGA HARDWARE WILL HAVE DROPPED BY THEN.WHAT ARE YOUR SUGGESTIONS NOW THAT YOU KNOW MY FULL STORY. Himanshu, If you walk into a computer store, pick up a piece of software, and walk out without paying for it – what is that? It doen't matter HOW MUCH the software costs. Just because it is EASY to STEAL, with little chance of getting caught, DOESN'T MAKE IT RIGHT. Getting the software from someone else who STOLE IT is the same also. Porche's, BMW's and Mercedes' are more expensive cars than "normal". BUT just try telling a COP that "it won't hurt the company" or "this car was over priced – therefore I am justified in taking it". The corrolary is also true: the high prices of today's software is caused by piracy. It's a no win situation for both publishers and honest customers.

I understand your interest in keeping the software you already have. But the "software" emulators DON'T work well enough to be usable. I haven't heard about the "hardware emulator" you spoke of, that MIGHT just be good enough, BUT how much would it cost compared to a 64 (new at a discount OR used). Once you start using an Amiga, you will become less enamored of your 64 software. Sometimes it is best to make a "clean break" and just get the Amiga – and either sell or otherwise get rid of your other things. IF you really want your 64 stuff, just get the 64 and save for the Amiga. But you just may find that once you get the Amiga, you will wonder why you "waited" so long. Lloyd

DEAR LLOYD, THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY.I REALLY THINK YOU ARE RIGHT.I WILL IN THE MEANTIME GO IN FOR A C64 (USED) AND AT THE SAME TIME SAVE UP FOR AN AMIGA 2OOO.THANKS ALL THE SAME. HIMANSHU
