Buzz,
I saw your messages about trying to upload with AmigaTerm. I have the same
program and experienced the same problem. I finally managed to upload a
sizeable file successfully by switching from Compuserve B to XMODEM. The
sequence is as follows:
Start off connecting with Compuserve B, even parity and word length 7.
as i assume you do. When you want to upload, you switch to Xmodem by
selecting menu PROTOCOL, Item File Transfer, and then check off XMODEM. Next
switch Parity to none with the Parity menu. Then Switch Word Length to 8.
Next select send from the first menu. A requester will appear asking you for
the name of the file that you want to transfer.
I forgot to mention that when you ask to upload to compuserve it will ask
what Protocol you want. Select Xmodem instead of Compuserve B. I think that
this is all I needed to do. Leave me as message if you can not get it to work
and I'll try one to see if I can still do it.
good luck

Pete,
Thanks for the help. I haven't tried your method, but I did download Ahost
communication software. It works great!!! I highly recommend you download it if
you are still useing AmigaTERM.
Buzz
Buzz,
There's a caveat to using AHost. If you get a couple of errors during
a B-Protocol transfer…it will lock and you will have to do a warm-start to
regain control of the Amiga.
Don
No problems yet Don, but thanx for the warning. Is anyone working on the next
version?
Buzz,
Not really….the author is quite busy with other things at this time.
He did say he planned on upgradding the package…but only when he got some
time.
Don
Don,
Well, so far so good. I haven't had any problems yet. How does CIS deal
with the situation if I lock up and warm boot? Does it know I'm gone, or should
I log back on rightaway and then log back off?
Do you have any recommendatior commercialy available telecommunication
packages with some of the same type of features (i.e. Chat windows,40 function
keys,etc.) as AHost?
thanks,
Buzz
Buzz,
No…when you hang up on CIS (which a warm-start will do) you are
logged off immediately.
Don
Don,
Thanx loads!
Buzz
Don, doing a warm start will not hang up your modem. How can it? There is no
reset line connecting the two together. You should be able to do a warm start,
fire up your terminal program, and continue where you left off. I know, as I
have done it due to AHost and Starterm crashing. I even turned the power off
to the computer (cold start) and was able to continue where I left off.
If you will read the CI$ documentation again, you should find that it can take
several minutes, up to 20 I think, before CI$ will notice you are no longer
there. Don't ask me where to find this info, as I can't remember.
73, Kelly
Kelly, if you have DTR set, warm starting will most definitely hang up your
modem.
If you hang up on CIS, 90% of the time it's recognized immediately. The other
10% of the time it takes no longer than 3 minutes.
Steve;
I think the key is if you hang up. If you lock up its quite conceivable
that if you sign on quickly & do a US you will see your ID still there! I admit
its not that long but if you wanna test it dont type anything & see how long it
takes to get a Job terminated by System. If you DONT have DTR set, if you have
dtr forced on all the time or if you are using a Commodore 8bit that doesn't
have dtr CI$ has no way of knowing that you have hung up & may take awhile.
When I used to be an active CI$ subscriber (vic/64/1600/1650 the _old_ days) it
could take up to 30mins & more but this time around CI$ seems to have it down
pat.
Just thought Id stick my $0.02 where it wasn't wanted! 😉
Ena
Ena,
There is a difference you aren't taking in to account. CIS will detect
a hang-up in 0-180 seconds (yes, their modems DO have DTR). If you sit around
for 15-20 minutes and do not type anything CIS will automatically log you off
(they figure you got mugged or perhaps died while online). In that case, it
has nothing to do with DTR.
Kelly,
Your modem is improperly set then to leave DTR on all the time. You
should have your modem set to recognize DTR rather than to force it on.
Dropping DTR (which DOES drop during a warmstart) will cause a modem to
disconnect unless you have it set to forced on. Some terminal programs set DTR
on and leave it on (Starterm being one of them) so you can quit the program and
stay online…but a warmstart should always hang the modem up as it prevents
you from staying connected and not being aware of it for one reason or another.
Also, according to CIS network folks (and we asked this question
recently to clear up the issue), CIS software recognizes a hangup immediately
and terminates the session.
One thing that does take 20 minutes is sitting idle (no keystrokes) and
then CIS will hang up on you. With your modem set to forced DTR, if you shut
your Amiga off while you are on-line, that would take 20 minutes before CIS
hangs up on you.
Don
Don,
Improperly set is in the eye of the beholder. I _never_ want my modem to hang
up unless I specifically tell it to. Switching terminal programs, warm booting,
are not, in my opinion, commands to the modem. My commands to hang up consist
of (a) sayng "bye', (b) sending +++, followed by the appropriate command, or
(c) turning off the modem power. As a matter of fact, the only three wires I
have connected to the modem are TxD, RxD, and ground.
Regards, Larry.
Larry,
True…to each his own…but the "proper" method is to have DTR control
the modem…that's what it was designed for. Knowing folks may like it set up
another way…manufacturer's put in forced ON capability but that still doesn't
change the standard.
Don
I couldn't agree with you more! Term programs that (pd or otherwise) that hang
up my modem without me telling them to have a very short life expectancy at my
house.
I agree — reset is not a command to the modem, and the fact that a modem, if
completely connected to the system, will hang up then is a matter of some real
inconvenience — especially since CI$ will forget what you've been doing if you
hang up in an unstructured manner! –Ben–
Buzz,
Thanks, I got Aterm but did not get Ahost. Access is alsoa great program to
play with as far as terminal programs go. Good Luck, Pete, NO2D
Pete;
Just a note but the Amigaterm manual is in ERROR, whenit states word
length 7. On CIS when using B-Protocol it wont even download at 7. (Although
viewing text is no problem). Next time you might wanna try 8 just to see if it
makes a difference. (I havent tried uploading yet but it just hangs up on
downloading with 7bit wl) Ena
Ena,
Thanks for the tip. I have been through that frustration and one of the
fine Sysop's assisted me. I switched to 8 bit none and the downloads worked
fine. Uploads didn't seem to work nohow, so I left compuserve b and went to
XMODEM. TRY it off-line first. That worked fine. Buzz suggested Ahost and I
tried Aterm and Access!. Both of them seem to work, and Access! is very
colorful. Best Regards, Pete, NO2D
