#Upgrade to 2000

Anyone help me make up my mind about upgrading to the 2000 during the $1000
offer? I'm away from here frequently and probably missed all the
discussion–can somebody sum up the salient points pro and con for me, please?

In reality, the move from the 1000 to the 2000, as for as the ability of the
Amiga, is strictly a lateral move. The 2000 will do nothing more than the
1000. The 2000 has 11 expansion slots. 5 for Amiga cards (or 4 depending on
configuration). 4 (or 3) for the MS-DOS side (assuming you get the
BridgeBoard). It has 2 video expansion slots. Add ons for the 2000 will be
(are) cheaper than for the 1000 because casing and/or external power are not
required. If you need MS-DOS compatibility it's easier to get on the 2000 —
it's a card you buy. On the 1000 you have to get the Sidecar. There are
indications that the 500 and 2000 can easily upgrade to 1 meg chip ram when CBM
releases a new Agnus chip in the next free months. This is impossible for the
1000 because the address lines just aren't there.
So, you really have to judge your specific needs. For me, I took advantage of
the trade in — others I know felt there wasn't enough of a change between the
machines to justify the extra expense.
Thanks for the complete and prompt reply. I knew some but not all, and the
decision is not an easy one, not knowing CBM's future plans for product
upgrades/options, but I think I may well sit things out for a time, as long as
software compatibility is assured (at least for now), and as long as the 1000
is supported by hardware upgrades. It's tempting, just a rather expensive
upgrade for no real immediate tangible rewards. Thanks again! <mr>
