I had some problems getting this to work with an AppleScanned PICT file today, in fact my SE had a rather spectacular crash (screen flashes and loud buzzing noise) when I tried. Is this a known problem or am I experiencing something out of the Twighlight Zone?

To the best of my knowledge, DrawOver will not work with a PICT scan file…all you'd get is a big rectangle (although I doubt that it is supposed to buzz and crash as you say). DrawOver is designed for PICT object files., like those created by MacDraw 1.9…in this case it simply "draws" a PostScript shape for every corresponding object in the file. Works great with some old MacDraw Clip art I had laying around. I don't believe DrawOver is compatible with MacDraw II, however. -Scott Leyes

I didn't know that their was that much of a difference between a scanned PICT and a drawn PICT. How would one get a scanned PICT into Illustrator? Use as a Template like MacPaint files?

Illustrator will identify and use PICT files as templates, but PICT files seem to use a LOT more memory (RAM) than MacPaint files…enough to cause frequent "out of memory" situations on a Mac Plus with a single meg of RAM. The best way I've found to incorporate scanned images is to save them as an EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) file, then use the "Place" command (in the file menu). This will place a rectangular object on your illustrator screen, which you can slant/distort/scale etc, and can see in preview mode. If your scanner software doesn't save in the EPS format, you might consider using some image retouching software like ImageStudio.

DrawOver has only worked for me occasionally (and then only on documents created in MacDraw, not PICT drawings from other applications like Canvas or SuperPaint). When it fails I have seen lots of different unpleasant crashes.
