Yes, it is a terrible catch-22. The hardware vendors don't want to write
drivers for every application ever written, and the software vendors don't
want to write drivers for every piece of hardware on the planet. You can't
blame either one of them.
I know! Let's dump it on the Operating System guys! Yeah, they'll do it.
OS/2 does it. Windows 3.0 does it. Sun and Apple do it (if it's their
hardware/software). It might work if we could all agree on The Right Way
To Do It for more than five minutes.
Scene: <nighttime> The masses descend on an office campus in Redmond, WA,
all carrying torches and chanting "Standard interface, Standard interface".
The Silver Surfer, standing on his board high above, simply shakes his head
and thinks to himself "the beauty of standards is that there are so many of
them."

Just a casual observation…
It would seem to me that if you guys wish to interface with their hardware
and they wish to sell product to your market that the two of you could work
together instead of competing. That kind of vendor competition and finger
pointing is the reason why we are losing our economy here in the US.
Japan and Europe don't need to fight with us for our market…we do enough
fighting amongst ourselves! <g> They just come in from behind, dump product
with low prices, and take over. Thier companies work close enough together
to make that possible!

I don't look at it as "competition" and "finger-pointing" (although there
is enough of that), so much as trying to find The Right Way to do
something. It's hard enough getting three people to agree on where to eat
lunch without having to deal with VESA standards, motherboard buss
architecture, serial communications, operating systems, layer names, …
you get the idea.
All this diversity shakes the good ideas out of the trees and hopefully we
will pick them all up, brush them off and put them to use in something that
evolves into The Standard.

It would be a very interesting discussion to try and determine a "Right
Way" to do anything! <g> Most people I know of accept a reasonable attempt.
I see your point! My frame of reference was limited to interfacing with
printers and plotters through the standard serial and parallel devices and
thought you were refering to the interface language differences.
BTW, The EEs around here love to giggle and correct me when I use a trade
name for a fuse company in writing about a motherboard interface. <g>
What do you think of Layer merge and text access through the Release 12 ADI
spec?
