I am working with a customer using AutoCad 386 Relsome problems getting the
program and hardware to work together. Tryng to get help from the AutoCad
dealer has been of no value.
The problem is simple. The user has a requirement to edit, hopefully
infrequently, very large drawing files. The largest to date is 15 MB and
growing.
The program retrieves the drawing and displays it very well. The problem
is editing. As soon as any changes are made we get the message, "FATAL
ERROR:
AFPAGER: ERROR WRITING PAGE FILE."
It appears to me that we are running out of hard disk space for the
temporary files. The dealer technician said the problem was related to the
network. I cannot accept that for two reasons:
1) We had not and do not load network software and drivers since
we wanted to maximize RAM available to AutoCad.
2) The problem is eliminated (with performance degradation) by
using the network drive to store the drawing files.
I need to know how to configure the work station to eliminate the fatal
error. We would like to run the program entirely locally if possible. If
necessary we can increase the size of the local hard disk but we would like
a recommendation on how large it should be.
The following background is provided: Machine : Arche 386-33 (80386DX
w/80387)
RAM : 8MB
Hard Disk : 80 MB Seagate IDE w/60 MB free. (AutoCad &
CadCamera only applications loaded.)
Additional
Drive : Iomega Bernoulli dual 20 MB
DOS : MicroSoft 5.0
Video : SuperVGA 1MB RAM on display adapter using
their ADI4 driver (not 386)~ Plotter : Nicolet Zeta 836 CS using
their ADI driver (not 386)
Network : Novell 2.2 (ARCNET)
ACAD SN : 110-10121491
Dwg Size : 15147008 Bytes
460571 Entities (and growing)
We have no problem with modifying any configuration parameter to maketo
maH535-1600 Linwood Beverly – User.

Are you still using it? How does you like it? Have you looked at any newer
products?

PS – you should have at least three or four times the size of your drawing
available as free disk space. On an 80Mb drive with CAD/camera and AutoCAD
loaded, you may just not have enough room, even if it is all in one
partition.

You guessed right; you're out of disk space. AutoCAD 386's virtual memory
systems can gobble disk space like crazy, especially with enormous drawings
like the ones you're talking about.
Like Dave said, 3 times the file size is a *very* rough rule of thumb, and
in this case it's obviously too low, since 15 x 3 = 45 MB and you've got 60
MB free. My guess is that a 150 MB drive would be big enough, but it might
be a good idea to go even larger if you can.
BTW, if this customer's AutoCAD dealer isn't willing to help him, then
Autodesk wants to know about it. AutoCAD dealers are required to provide
support (although they're allowed to charge for it). You can send a message
