#Sony vs NEC Advice

I am in the process of purchasing a CD-ROM system for a 386-25 and could use some advice. I'm debating between the Sony Laser Library and the NEC83. The NEC is faster 300ms as opposed to 340ms and also has a larger buffer 64K against 8K. Unfortunately is costs over $200 more and comes with no software as does the Sony. How much emphasis should I place on the access speed and the buffer size? One review I read said that the Sony was definitely the best for the money. Another review said it was a better value than the NEC, but did not meet Microsoft's multimedia specs. Any advice or comments anyone could provide that will help me in making a decision would be *greatly* appreciated. Thanks for all of your help. -map- There are 2 Replies.

Have you considered the Sony CDU-541 (int) or CDU-7211 (ext)? It is a SCSI drive and has has a 380ms access time and a 64k buffer. It's MPC certified. So far it has done all realtime animation without any pauses or glitches. I've heard that the buffer size is more important for animated sequences. Another important factor is the sustained transfer rate. 150kb/sec minimum for the MPC standard. The PC MAG review indicated that the NEC did not do animation well. But I think that NEC is suppose to be release an upgraded drive that meets the MPC standard.
